Default Broadband ok with two computers?

Is it possible/feasible to have two pc, that are situated close together,
connected to broadband via a single standard USB ADSL Modem so that either
of them can go on-line but with only one pc on-line at any one time?

Only if you physically unplug one from the modem and plug then other
in.

Or... buy a router with a built in modem - you will be a lot more secure
against hackers - you`ll need a network card in each machine though.
