Ok,

So I've gone forth and bought myself a nice new shiny Zoom X4 ADSL Modem.
Just a few questions

1. Can I use the plusnet setup pages for the solwise in terms of setting

up
though putting in the ip address of my router for setting up my

connection.

Take a look at
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware...q2/zoom-x4.asp which is a
review of the Zoom router, and includes setup instructions. The only
difference for you will be your uername and password.

2. How will I know that "something is happening" when my exchange goes

live
circa August 6th. When should I actually be able to see adsl line status

on
my router through the setup ie the db etc.

The link LED on the front of your router will light up when it has synched
with the exchange. Not sure about the line status, but I susoect that info
will only be meaningfull after your line has been activated.

Hi,

For reference, with a PlusNet activation, as soon as you get line sync
you should try connecting with your PlusNet account details. Initially
you may get a username / password error but our systems will pick up
your attempt and will automatically activate your account.

After this has happened, it is normally no more than 30 minutes before
your connection is fully up and running on this side and you are away.

With most routers now all you need to do is make sure your settings
match something like:

VPI = 0
VCI = 38
ADSL Modulation: Auto, then try G.DMT, then try ANSI T1.413
Encapsulation Mode: PPP over ATM (PPPoA - RFC2364) VC-MUX
Authentication: CHAP

Which are generic settings for all ADSL connections.

The only specific PlusNet thing you need to do is enter your username
(Which you chose when you signed up) in the router as:

and of course you will also need your account password which again is
selected at signup.

BT can take days from the initial line activation to tell us about it,
so the automated system is extremely useful for those who already have
their equipment. We have seen many cases of people being up and
running within 48 hours of the order being made using this method.

I should just point out a couple of other things he

1. Just because you have sync, it doesn't mean your line has been
fully activated, although in most cases it will have been. If it
doesn't work initially then you can only hold tight and keep trying
until you are actually informed that your line is active.

2. When we activate an account before BT's systems have marked the job
as complete it means we cannot log a fault with them. That means if
anything is not right we can only wait for BT to sign off all the work
before progressing any faults with them.

3. You will be billed your first monthly payment as soon as the
account is activated.

With Regards,

Ian

This is not so clever. For obvious reasons I had to wait for your email that
the line was activated before purchasing the hardware. The brand I wanted
wasn't available, I bought Netgear modem/router which didn't work, returned
that, etc. It was two weeks before I finally got the connection working.

I think you should start charging on the first use of the ADSL connection.

Jerry

Bob is correct here, we are charged by BT for the connection from the
moment they say that the line is activated as so we must pass on those
costs. The only other option would be to increase the price of the
accounts to balance the loss we would make from this - and I think
that you will agree this is not good business sense.
