Default Binary News servers - why?

Forgive my ignorance and for going OT, but I read people asking about binary
news servers - can someone please enlighten me as to what the attraction is
and why they so important to some people?

one2go was asking about your interests, hobbies, etc., to determine
which binary newsgroups you would be interested in. For example, if you
like tv commercials, subscribe to news:alt.binaries.sounds.tv-commercials
