Default ADSL Router + Cable Modem

Hi,

My brother has asked me a question which I unfortunately can't help with but
someone else may know the answer.

He has Netgear ADSL modem router and recently moved to an area which has
cable broadband only. Will he be able to plug in the cable modem (via
ethernet) to his router and use this setup for broadband access to his 2
PC's? He doesn't really want to buy another router which specifically works
with cable modems unless there's no other option.

Cheers

Mehbs

If it's a combined ADSL/router (ie the WAN port plugs direct into the
phone line) then no, unless it's high-end and has an ethernet WAN port as
well as the telephone port.

If he has an ADSL modem that plugs into the router, then the cable modem
would be a direct replacement.

He has a combined ADSL/router so it looks like he'll have to change it for a
cable version.

Thanks for clarifying things..

No.

Actually this /may/ be possible if the ADSL modem is a switch/hub.
Setting one PC up as the PPPoE end-point and configure it with a
second IP address in say 192.168.0.x and ICS, then configure the
sencond PC with a similar IP address and have it source the traffic
from the first PC.

There are some nice looking Zyxel cable routers on Ebay at the moment,
last time I looked one had been bid up to £1.20 (yeah, one pound and
twenty pence) with only a few hours to go, could get a bargain?

Then again, "search completed" is probably a more accurate guide to price,
as the advent of software "last minute" bidding tools has kind of distorted
prices for items with more than one bidder.

Well, it went for just over a tenner plus shipping (£9.99) so it still
looks reasonable to me.
