I seem to be getting packet loss with huge downloads, suppose it could be a
router problem or just sods law. I'd be interested in feedback from any
other f2s users on this and f2s in general.

Cheers

Jay

Can't give you IPs as it's the update patch for Sony's Planetside
multiplayer game and that uses it's own download software. The only other
file I have had hassle with is the install files for Project Entropia which
come to about 500+mb and I'm sure you don't want to subject yourself to
anything that huge, it's at 217.212.241.43 anyway if that traceroute thing
can test a connection without having to commit to the download, all far too
technical for me!

What you've said is enough to make me think that it is probably hardware
related if anything. It could also be a blocked port on my router, though
you'd think that'd stop the download in its tracks. Can't figure how to
apply the port related info on Sony's tech help pages with the set-up on
this modem. Sods law I picked a Mentor model who offer zero in the way of
tech support. Wish I'd gone with the one F2S offer now.

I'm afraid not mate. Perhaps you could post a traceroute to some IPs
you are having trouble contacting and I will post the output from my F2s
connection? I can't really comment on packet loss tbh as I use NTL at
University, but my debian box at home is hosted on F2S ADSL. I have
experienced no slow downloads when using apt-get or wget. But as I
said, happy to try traceroute for you.

A what? Sorry, you'll have to spell it out. If you are asking for what I
think you are asking for their IP address is: 217.212.241.43 and the other
reply on this thread contain the traceroute result for it if that helps.

Those hop times are fine. The traceroute never makes it to its final
destination, but this is because the host is blocking ICMP replies.

Thanks. I'm guessing hop times are fine is a good thing. Afraid it's all
gibberish to me but I assume the traceroute not getting there doesn't imply
there's any fault.

I wouldn't be so sure....? What gateway are you on? To find out, just
look at the 'gw' bit in your ADSL username. I'm on gw5.

Same.

If that site is the only one you're having problems with then I would
imagine its something their side, not F2S. Ask someone else on a
different ISP to download the same file and see what speeds he gets?

I will but I'm expecting them to get it ok as my problem is something with
my set-up - somewhere! I was suggested to check my virtual memory settings
as it might be screwing up the file decompression. I think it probably was
too low and I made sure it was set to system managed on all drives which if
I understand correctly makes all available space usable if needed. Didn't
solve the problem though but at least that's narrowed down the
possibilities.
