I'd suggest look at postfix, amavis and spamassassin and maybe clamav.
I've implemented postfix and spamassassin on the smtp relay at work and for
the price (free other than sweat and hardware) it's a very flexible
I can do whitelisting on addresses/domains/IPs, blacklisting on
addresses/domains/IPs, do DNS blocklist filtering for mail to certain
addresses but not all, refuse mail to invalid users (sounds obvious but a
lot of MTAs accept mail to and then bounce).
I'd say auto whitelisting is a bad thing, simply because so many
spam/viruses emails come with a from address of someone you know.
