Default Linksys BEFW11S4 router and Netgear DM602 ADSL modem don't work together

I have a problem getting a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless-B router and a
Netgear DM602 ADSL modem to work together in the conventional way and
wonder whether anyone in the group can advise me on how they should be
configured.

I have been using the Linksys box as a WAP switch on my home network
(no broadband) without problems for a year.

I've just signed up for ADSL broadband with PlusNet (PPPoA) and have
bought the Netgear modem because the Linksys box doesn't include an
ADSL modem. When the Netgear modem is connected to the WAN RJ45 socket
on the Linksys router, the router reports a successful WAN connection
but I can't access the internet from the LAN.

The Netgear modem is firmware level 3.05NUT17-1.38.030131d. Its device
mode is set to modem and not router, and it is configured to login
using my PPPoA user details. In this mode, the spec says it spoofs LAN
side DHCP requests with the assigned WAN IP address.

The Linksys router is firmware level 1.45.3, Jul 11 2003. It is
configured to obtain a WAN IP address automatically (i.e. don't login,
use DHCP) and it is the default gateway for the LAN. With this config,
the Linksys box status page reports that it is connected and has a WAN
IP address. Its routing table looks OK but all internet access
attempts from the LAN timeout.

I know the system is generally working OK because if I reconfigure the
setup such that the Netgear modem is connected to one of the Linksys
switch ports, the Netgear device mode is set to router, and it is my
default gateway, I *can* access the internet.

Any suggestions as to what is causing the problem?

Not sure if anyone has replied to you direct on this one yet... I
thought I would give it a go anyway.

Are you able to ping anything on the internet from the Linksys when it
is configured in the non-working scenario?

Another question that could be relevant is whether you are pinging names
or IP addresses. IP connectivity could be there, but DNS name
resolution might not work for some reason. Try pinging Cisco on
198.133.219.25 and see if that works.

If you are able to post transcripts or screen-shots of the routing
tables for the two devices that would be helpful.

However, if I were you and I had just bought the box, I would probably
do one of the two following things:

1. Return the DM602 and get a DG632 (which has integrated firewall).
The set it up as you mention in your last paragraph - don't bother with
the WAN port on the Linksys at all. The DG632 is currently £52 at
Amazon and £54 at simply.co.uk

2. Return the DM602 and get a Linksys wireless/DSL/router in one box.
I'd go for the Linksys WAG54G (because I am a creature of habit and
quite like Linksys) £76 on ebuyer.co.uk. There's a Belkin on there too
for £65 (quickfind code 52384 - can't tell what the manufacturer's model
number is).

Of course, if you don't want to go through the hassle of returning
product, let us know the answers to the questions above and I'll try to
help further.

Thanks Andrew for responding. No other replies yet. It's good to have
the opportunity to bounce ideas of other people who understand :)

Before posting evidence, this is what I've tried since original post:

- upgraded Linksys firmware to latest version 1.50.13, May 6 2004 - no
change to symptoms
- looked at US Linksys support pages - lots of "internet connection"
problems but all the causes seem to be pretty basic config errors
which stop any and all access whereas it is clear from my Linksys
status page that the Netgear looks to have responded appropriately to
the Linksys' DHCP request since the Linksys has got the correct
Internet and nameserver IPs, and netmask.

Yes - I'm aware of that gotcha - my pings are to numeric IPs.

Well, both boxes seem to work OK independently, the Linksys is now
about a year old, and the Netgear was bought 'as new' on eBay, so
returning either is not my first choice, especially since they work
together when the Netgear is not feeding the Linksys' WAN port. I feel
they *should* work together and the problem is likely to be a Linksys
configuration subtlety which I'm missing or a bug in one of the two
sets of firmware but neither manufacturer web sites describes similar
problems. Yes, if I was doing this all again today, I would buy an
all-in-one wireless-G box (as I did last month when setting up some
friends' home network with a Netgear DG834G). I must admit, buying
such a box and selling the current pair on eBay has crossed my mind
;).

Anyway, I've tried the problem configuration again and grabbed some
evidence for you to see.

After setting the Netgear into modem (rather than router) device mode,
power cycling it, then while it is still connected to the LAN (and not
the Linksys WAN port), tell it to disconnect then reconnect. Checking
the Netgear PPP status page shows:

Looks OK so move modem RJ45 across from Linksys switch port to WAN
port. After power cycling Linksys, checking its status page shows:
