Default newbie: always on connection?

Hi,
V21/zoom usb modem
I have to 'dial' up to connect and occasionally am disconnected.
Is this normal? Does it differ with modem brands or routers?

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,

Firstly ditch the USB modem. This is the cause of the dial ups, and also a
host of future problems as well, unless they have got more stable. Unless
your on Win XP then theres no firewall between you and the net apart from
the built in windows one.

Nothing to keep viral infection or worms out, and with ADSL it'll happen
sooner or later.

Get yourself a cheap Broadband router, which will come with a built in
firewall. About 30 from most online stores (dabs, simply etc). Once this is
set with your username / password you won't need to 'dialup' again. It is
then permanently connected to the adsl until a reboot may be required.

Switch on the pc and it's just there. As they say it is in the adverts!
