Do you need a new router/modem to support these new speeds or will my
existing Netgear router cope with them?

Most ADSL router/modems sold in the UK are good to 34Mb or something
like that. Check the router specs.

And most ADSL modems support 8MB down and 1MB up. Having said that, how
they actually operate when placed in this position is another kettle of
fish entirely.

Most ADSL modems support upto 8MB down.

Some support ADSL2/2+ (or can be upgraded via a firmware upgrade) which can
operate at uptp 24MB

Sunil
