Default AOL Broadband + Router with USB Modem?

Evening,

A friend of mine is considering getting AOL with the free usb modem and hes
wondering if he can get a router which will support usb modems? or would he
have to get a modem/router combo which is supported by AOL?

TIA

Tim.

no. forget it.

not really, he just needs one that works :-)
support can come from many sources.

On the cheapest service they don't "support" networking, so he'll have
to come on here to be told to re-install something five times over
then buy a new modem lead.

Normally you can use an adsl router which allows you to alter the MTU, which
is pretty much all of them, but they are the odd one that you have problems
with.
Even then, the other week i had a very strange aol broadband router problem,
it would not for the life of me allow a PPOA connection (that is how all
none aol adsl BT broadband connects, and is perfect for a router), linking
only on a PPOE.

I set up a Netgear DG834G (V1.05.00 firmware) for a customer who uses AOL.
Having reduced the MTU from the default of 1458 to AOL's value of 1400, it
connects perfectly.

However she's reported that occasionally the router disconnects and won't
reconnect for a hour or so. Unfortunately she hadn't preserved the logs so
I'm not sure what the problem was. I've asked her to look at the log
whenever she has a problem.

I think all the settings apart from MTU are standard: PPPoA, VCI/VPI 0/38,
VC Mux - as set by the Netgear configuration wizard.
