Default Satellite anyone?

My residential line has just failed on ADSL provision (too far from the
exchange) even at 256kbs. Looking now at satellite and would welcome any
recommendations. Rapidsat is one that has been suggested at 16.99 a
month for one-way - are they reliable?

Jim,
can't comment on satellite but out of interest, how far are you from
the exchange?

Looked in detail at Rapidsat which seemed to be a reasonable cost for
one way transmission. One way is about 20 a month but you need a dial-
up ISP for uploading e.g., requesting web pages and verifying packets
received. A further problem then that this does not release the phone
line which ordinary ADSL does. You need a digital receiver PCI card in
your PC - WinNova or similar and a satellite dish.

Two way satellite is very expensive. I have given up on broadband for
the moment - perhaps there will be something new in the not too distant
future.

Good luck with your line length - it all depends on the quality of your
phone line - mine is very "rural".

I have a 2-way system for sale for sensible money, and a recommend for
a moderate cost ISP, if you want to email me off-group.
