Default OK to use softmodem for CLI, dialler, answer machine, etc? [OT]

I'm on NTL broadband running XP Pro/SP2. Would like to ask about
analgue modems as some of the specialists here in u.t.b. might
have come across this before.

I want to connect my old 56K software modem which fits into a PCI
slot. I would like to use the modem so my PC can do things like:

display CLID,
act as a phone dialler,
record phone calls,
act as an answering machine,
etc

The modem is a Diamond SupraSST 56i PRO DF
http://www.modem-help.co.uk/mfc/sonic.html#SUP2850

Is it likely this modem can do those things sorts of things above?

Thanks.

PS: I ask because this website
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/buy.asp contains all sorts of
possible dire incompatibilities such as V.92, speakphone function,
Connexant/Rockwell HSF 56K chipsets, SmartLink and all sorts of
stuff I have never heard of.

The web site completely loses me when he talks about DAA (data
access arrangement), type 1 caller id, full-duplex sound, V.92 PCM
upstream, etc. Sounds like most of this stuff is for dialup to an
ISP but I don't really know.

Might get some answers from readers of uk.telecom (so I have
cross-posted). Some (many?) on uk.telecom.broadband might not
have used a 56k modem for a few years, and there have been any
number of queries on uk.telecom over the years (perhaps some
time using http://groups.google.com/ could find your answers).

Few UK ISPs have mentioned support of V.92 as ADSL has been an
alternative for higher speeds which has become quickly popular
and widely avaialble at low cost (even compared with dial-up).

Provided the modem is connected to a standard phone line, then it should
work, no real reason why not.
You say NTL Broadband, is this Cable Broadband you're referring to?..if it
is, you cannot plug the modem into the same line, NTL use different lines
into the property for phone, tv and/or broadband.

At the time of posting, I wasn't aware of an independent
thread having been started in uk.telecom - I just saw a
post in u.t.b OK ? Peter Morgan.
