Default USB Problem

Is it USB 2? Are the USB 2 drivers installed?

Got Service Pack 1 installed?

Just a few things that spring to mind.

Cheers

Hi i recentally format and done a clean install of xp pro for a friend, he
has ntl broadband 150k, which connects via USB, the machine only has one

USB
port, i set all the internet backup again, but yesterday he rang me to

tell
me the internet was down, so i looked and the modem wasnt even installed

and
will not detect now, i have used a different cable, tried a usb hub and
tried plugging in a usb webcam and that is not detected.

Has the USB died on the motherboard? if so what can i do will they need a
new motherboard or can you get USB PCI Slots?

TIA

AF

Check the Device Manager (Control Panel - System) to ensure that the USB is
installed and working, you may need to download drivers or install them from
the Motherboard CD if supplied.
Yes, you can buy PCI USB cards, 1 USB port is a bit lame anyway.
If there is a 2nd PCI slot available, get an Ethernet card too and use this
to connect the PC to the Modem, NTL should have supplied an Ethernet cable
and recommends using this instead of USB.

Have you checked the bios? Gremlins might have got in and disabled USB
support... you never know y'know.

I recently bought a PCI USB 2.0 card from a computer fair for 4.

Works a treat. 3 external ports and 1 internal port.

Stick a USB 2 PCI card in solves most problems -- not worth even
trying to get a reilable connection with an onboard USB 1.0 port
paricularly if it is a Via chipset.

USB2 expansion cards are readily available, if in fact his USB
is knackered. Much, much cheaper than replacing the motherboard.

Service Pack 1 installed, its not USB 2.

In that case a USB 2 expansion card would the ideal
solution. Better USB and more than one port.

(PC World sell them).
