Default NEWS: AOL thinking about exiting Europe

"AOL with something like 1.2 million broadband connections in the UK is one
of the large players, and if the rumours are correct AOL are looking for
someone to buy the business. This follows on from reports that AOL is
looking to leave the French and German markets also."

one possibility is NTL, they have existing links with AOL.

Another would be one of the big mobile players. O2 is the one to watch,
money available and market studies already at an advanced stage.

Oooh goody...

Why?

Leave the crappy suppliers for the noobiee.

Although the AOL connection, once established and used sans AOL
crapware, is a very good, fast and stable platform.

Would O2 be able to afford them? Google brought a 5% share for like 540
million?

Whether Telefonica (O2 owners) want to afford it depends on the asking
price. Telefonica certainly aren't short of money, but neither are they
short of common sense.
When Time Warner made it clear that AOL was for sale, Yahoo, Microsoft and
Google all showed an interest. When the price was revealed Yahoo immediately
lost interest, Microsoft thought about it for a few weeks before waving 2
fingers. Google bought 5% stake for $1bn USD to ensure that AOL didnt do
anything silly, like ues the MSN search engine - which would result in
Google losing a fortune in advertising revenue. All 3 of those companies are
still desperate to buy a UK ISP, and have been for some time.
It's also satisfying to note how fast AOL are losing customers, and how much
their revenue has dropped in Q1.
