Can someone recommend a reliable, low cost service to use with Outlook ...ie
pop/smtp email?

The Sky email service is nowhere near as good as their broadband service.

Find a domain, buy it, get email sorted on it.

I have no problems with Sky's email service. Running 3 separate email
accounts, all work fine.

The Claranet news and mail account is a service for customers who
require an email address and also the ability to send emails (SMTP
access) via an alternative ISP.

This account is suited to customers who have Internet access with a
different ISP but are not provided with an e-mail account or SMTP
access, such as BT Broadband Direct customers.
Features
Email account
Unlimited email addresses (SMTP/POP Mail)
Access to over 55,000 newsgroups (Text only)
10MB of webspace for your website

FastMail.net is one I use (primarily for outgoing mail, having paid a once-
only fee for 'member' level access, which allows SMTP but not POP, just IMAP
and web for incoming). They do have annual fee accounts too, but there are
a number of other free services which might also be suitable for incoming
POP access (eg yahoo.co.uk note not yahoo.com) or if you have PAYG or a
contract mobile, some offer a POP mailbox (eg Orange, with free SMS alerts).

Getting your own domain + annual hosting would certainly be another option,
and some low cost hosting can be had on Ebay for a once-only fee, or small
annual fees, ($3 to $10, with a variety of mailbox / mail forwarding and
{ catch-all / ignore / reject } options too, perhaps with 10 or 100 or
more user names - ie the 'username' in [email protected] ).
