Hi

We live in an area where ADSL is available (512/12), but we are a long way
from the excahnge, which is reducing our Upload speed. We can hear people,
but they have problems hearing us

Which VoIP needs the least Upload capacity to work very well?

Thanks folks

In theory, any provider using SIP should be able to service with this
bandwidth. It all depends on the codec your equipment uses and your ITSP
supports (see http://www.en.voipforo.com/codec/codecs.php). However, at 12
Kbps, I could imagine that the quality would be pretty much unusable. Also,
there could be more chance of ADSL connection dropping. Bear in mind that
you would normally have to have at least 90 Kbps in both directions to have
quality comparable to a POTS service.

My advice is to try to play about with the codecs your equipment uses. If
calls cannot then be connected, it may be because your ITSP does not suport
that codec. If the calls do succeed, you need to make the decision whether
the quality is acceptable. My personal opinion (based on experience with
solely high speed connections) is that the quality will not be acceptable.

Is that a typing error or are you really getting 12kbps upstream speed?
You wont get VoIP to work using such a slow speed no matter what you
do. G.729 requires about 30kbps in either direction for a slight
sacrifice in voice quality. In reality you'll probably need at least a
56kbps connection. You'll find most VoIP service providers support the
g729 codec and most commercial hardware does to. If you are using
Asterisk you'll have to buy licenses from Digium for about 20 each.

cheers,
Paul.

Hi,

Check the following link:
http://forums.networkingland.com/showthread.php?t=6158

for the exact bandwidth consumed by most VoIP codecs.

As you can see G.723 is the minimum among all with around 20Kbps over
all bandwidth consumption.

You must have some kind of QoS to get clear sound for both ends and
higher ADSL bandwidth other wise it's impossible to have decent VoIP.

OK, I thought as much. I guess you aren't actually getting that speed.
Try using g729 codec for a bit and see if it makes a difference.

Implementing QoS might be necessary too if you have other applications
using the Internet connection at the same time.

cheers,
Paul.
