Default toggle ADSL connection on and off ???how to ?

i dont want it on all the time cos of programes calling back home to
head office and all the other snoopy stuff .
there must be a way apart from pulling the plug from the modem or wall
socket.

Some routers have a schedule capability so you can set on and
off for certain hours.
If you P2P your IP address is exposed unless you use one
of the free public VPN servers, network activity can
continue for some while, unless you close both the client
and the VPN connection.
As for call homes, best is to block access at your firewall,
but this doesn't work if the program has to reach the vendors
server for updates, like anti-virus and spyware programs.
Many programs automaticall check for updates, this you
can block at your forewall.
