| My next door neighbour has lost his cable broadband with Virgin, it's been off for over three weeks and they have done nothing to solve the problem or answered his emails, he couldn't even get help over the phone as he only has a mobile, apparently you need a std number before you can access the help line so he has cancelled the contract and wants to find another cable supplier as he doesn't have a phone line. I had a look round for him but I can only find Virgin in my area, Kent, so does any body know of another supplier that I missed in my search. Trevor Smith |

Think Virgin have taken most of the different cable companies over, it seems that way. To be their customer dosn't he have a 'phone with them? Well I know where in my town there is a Virgin shop, I would go there and report it there if me. If not helpful I would talk loud about my problem with their CS and lack of connection for all the other people wishing to sign up to hear. -- Regards, David Please reply to News Group |

Historically the cable operators were granted licences for specific areas so there was no competition between cable operators in a particular location - however since then 'all' the cable operators, and there were lots at one time, have been consumed first by NTL and Telewest, who then merged into Virgin Media. Probably his only option, other than satellite or mobile, will be ADSL but that will require Openreach to install a phone line, albeit perhaps sub contracted by his chosen ISP. Google ADSL suppliers and take your pick, something like will tell you what is available www.broadband-finder.co.uk will tell you what is available. Peter |

BT normally charge £124.99 for a new phone line to be installed but he can get one for £29.99 if he's quick - the offer ends tomorrow. It's subject to various conditions e.g. staying with BT for 18 months. Then he could choose from one of the many ADSL ISPs. This might be the only viable alternative. Thanks for that Chris, I gather the offer has ended now as your link is dead and I hunted around on BT's site and found no reference to it. The previous owners of the house used to have a BT line but my present neighbour never had it reconnected and when BT replaced the telegraph pole in the street about four years ago they removed the line to his house, so possibly they would replace the line at a reduced rate if he asked? |

| Trevor wrote: My next door neighbour has lost his cable broadband with Virgin, it's been off for over three weeks and they have done nothing to solve the problem or answered his emails, VM do not 'do' support via email. The VM newsgroups are pretty active tho and they do book engineer visits that way. By the way if its been off that long he should be claiming back the last two payments he's made to VM as they've not provided the contracted service. he couldn't even get help over the phone as he only has a mobile, apparently you need a std number before you can access the help line Thats not quite correct (I know because I phoned them two days ago from my mobile), but unless you have a VM phone line the helpline is a chargeable number. so he has cancelled the contract and wants to find another cable supplier as he doesn't have a phone line. I had a look round for him but I can only find Virgin in my area, Kent, so does any body know of another supplier that I missed in my search. Unless you live on the Isle of Wight, in Cumbria or Hull your cable choices are Virginmedia or "start your own cable company" |

Trevor Smith You can only get Virgin cable on a Virgin cable connection. He will need a BT line for anyone else, unless he goes for mobile broadband from Three, T-mobile, Vodafone etc. |

I think he may well have to pay the full price. It's been a while since I worked for BT but the charging structure then was that if *any* external wiring (e.g. the drop-wire to his house) had to be provided or re-provided, the full charge applied. You'd only get a discount if the external wires existed all the way to the NTE. George |
