Since EDF dug up and replaced a shorting 1KV undergruound cable outside
(finally failed in the rain) I have got a consistently higher synch rate
(sort of 4Mbps-4.3Mbps dchange)..and it doesn't get worse in wet
weather any more..haha.

Just shows what arcane things *can* screw with ADSL...

I doubt it'll be 1KV, it's likely to be regular LV (nominal 400V), or
11KV

If it's 11KV, they tend to do more than fizzle - although i'd be
asking what the hell protection they've got on that part of the
network if a fault wasn't taking it out (possibly a Y type ring, where
the whole chain of substations would go off supply from the primary
(33KV) rather than a single inter-sub feeder as would happen in an X
type s/s)

typo. 11kv it was.

well it did take out the whole district, yes. Eventually. But I suspect
that it started life as a bit of tracking..

I ended up with a diesel generator for the whole two weeks, couretsy of
EDF. Once they had me and one other house isolated as being on the
faulty section.
