Default I Love Plusnet!

Hi all, I just want to share how happy I am with Plusnet. I signed up
with them in December 08 to their 1 month bargain package which was £10
for about 3Gb of data per month, then within a couple of days of my kids
downloading every thing they could get their hands on I smashed the
limit and Plusnet throttled me. I called them and they upgraded me to
the 15Gb package for £15 with no hassle at all and released the throttle.
I've been quite happy with them since then, no connection problems, no
speed issues, and a useful check my usage tool but BT have been courting
me offering 10Gb for £12.99 if I sign up for a year. I had been really
tempted, particularly when I discovered Plusnet had changed all their
contracts to 18 month deals with the BT-style 3 month intro discounts. I
called Plusnet this evening to check my historic usage to see if I ever
cross 10Gb when they offered me my current deal for £11 if I stayed for
a year.
I had reservations when I realised BT owned them, but I have had good
service and they are open and clear in their dealings.
I'm not even going to chase referrals, I just want you all to know - I
love Plusnet and I'm glad I signed up with them.

Well yes, Plusnet is a bit more friendly than BT, I must admit.
Like you, I left BT for Plusnet some years ago for two reasons:
1. Plusnet was cheaper
2. Plusnet have a UK-based call-centre, staffed by people with whom you can
actually have a reasonably intelligent conversation without resorting to
tearing out your hair!
However, Plusnet, along with many other ISPs do throttle ("traffic-manage")
connections on all but their most expensive "Pro" tariff, which can result
in some types of usage becoming exceedingly slow before midnight. As most
domestic customers tend to use their connections in the evenings, this can
be annoying unless, like me, you're willing to pay through the nose for a
"Pro" connection, which is really designed for gamers.
Plusnet have also recently drifted downwards into the mass market, offering
even cheaper tariffs but with fewer facilities for customers.
When I signed up, I was provided with free webspace, a free domain and so
on. These options have now been withdrawn.
There are other ISPs out there who do not throttle connections, and because
of the recent restrictions outlined above, I for one may be reluctantly
migrating away from Plusnet shortly.
Oh, and most ISPs will offer a cheaper deal if a customer threatens to
leave. Plusnet are not unique in this respect.

I too love PlusNet, and it is because I love them that I walked away.

I was on Premier which gives me a 20 Gig usage limit between 4pm and
midnight. But because I have three users at home, this translates to 222
Meg a day (or 18.5 Meg an hour), after I hit 13 Gig, my connection was
throttled.

Despite protestation from PlusNet that the same throttling as in place
on Value should give usable access, iPlayer was taking 11 hours to
download a program. iTunes was taking 23 minutes to download a song.

I have since moved to Be and now have the freedom to download whatever I
want, when I want. Unthrottled, Unshaped, Unlimited. I've hardly
downloaded a thing, but it was such a joy to sit here at 7pm and
download a song in two seconds!

Oh incidentally, the Pro account for three users would work out to:

15 Gig
15 * 1000 = 15000 Meg
15000 / 3 Users = 5000 Meg per month
5000 / 30 Days = 166 per user per day between 8am and midnight
166 / 16 hours (between 8 and midnight) = 10 Meg each an hour.

So the only thing you can do on a "Pro" account is look at a few
websites. Forget video streaming of any kind.

I would not know if we where being throttled or not, don't do much
downloading these days except for operating system updates.

I honestly think it is a matter of the area in which you live
regarding both VM and ADSL regarding the speed you get.
