| | WD My World Edition NAS as a VPN server? by
Adrian C
There is apparently a hack to install the OpenVPN server component on
WD's 'My world edition' linux based NAS thingy.
http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/openvpn
Anyone done this, and feel comfortable about the security of this
solution? Private IP thoughput issues? I can serve 1.3Mbps out of my
local network, the intention is to stream standard definition video
through the tunnel.

| | Adding NetBios to Win2K and Win 7 ??? by
JD
Hey Experts,
I am trying to setup a NetBios system on my pair of boxes - Box1
(Win2K) and NetBook (Win7).
I visited the 'Local Area Connection 2' in Network and Dialup
Connections on Box1.
Opening the 'Local Area Connection 2' and clicking the General tab I
find 'NWLink NetBios' and select it. Then I click the Install button and
I get a small window with choices of Client, Service and...

| | Phones don't reliably ring after putting in microfilters by
Mortimer
I was at a customer's house setting up broadband and put in microfilters in
all the phone sockets that had phones plugged into them, plus one for the
socket that the router is plugged into.
He's reporting that since then, intermittently his phones don't ring or else
give a feeble bleep instead of a proper ring-ring.
Now he may have fallen foul of the REN problem - the RENs of all his phones...

| | Boundary between BT and householder responsibility for phone wiring by
Mortimer
As I understand it, for a house with a two-part BT master socket, the
boundary between BT and householder responsibility for line faults that
affect broadband is the master socket: *even if BT rather than the
householder has installed an extension*, that extension is the householder's
responsibility.
But what is the situation if there no discernable master socket? The other
day I was called...

| | Wireless Router _ Switches by
bin me
Hi,
Currently have a US robotics domestic product which has worked very well
and reliably for about 5 years. I now need to update and include
wireless connectivity. I am looking to order in about 1 months time.
I need very good reliability and firewall protection above anything
else. I also need at least 4 LAN ports (6 or more would be nice) as
well as wireless connectivity, ADSL2 or...

| | Wierd PC-router problem by
arthurh
This has baffled me and I have reached the limit of my knowledge. Can
anyone here offer a solution?
My home network has an ADSL router with 4 wired ports plus wireless.
Two ports have wired desktop PC connections and a third has a NAS disk
array. There's also a laptop using the wireless connection.
A few days ago one of the desktop PCs suddenly decided that it could
no longer access the other...

| | Is Ignoring Michael (TKIP) a mad/bad idea? by
Adrian C
WPA-TKIP heads on please.
I'm currently debugging someone else's WPA wireless card driver and
having some issues with TKIP MIC failures blocking ubuntu traffic to my
access point. So, in the name of getting the custom build out of the
door, I've disabled MIC checking and the whole thing 'authenticates'
nicely. Phew....
However, the wireless environment that this build is heading for is...

| | Zyxel router won't do DHCP over Ethernet but will do so over wireless by
Mortimer
A friend asked my to investigate why his new router, a Zyxel P-660HW-T V2,
(supplied by his business) wasn't allowing one of his PCs to work.
I established that this PC, which is connected over Ethernet, isn't being
given an IP address whereas another PC which connects over wireless is
getting an IP address by DHCP. My own laptop failed in the same way to get
an IP address over Ethernet but...

| | How do I Block MSN... by
Steve
Hi
Son has a PC, and is quite responsible using it, but have found that he is
tempted to spend all the evening after school on MSN and Facebook, and also
late at night, chatting to his friends.
I have a Dell router, and I have used this to quite successfully block all
traffic to his PC after 2230 to stop him spending all night on it. However
between the hours of 1530 and 1700, I would like...

| | Renegotiation? by
Tim Streater
Just put in a Netgear DG834Gv5 at home to replace a Voyager 210 that was
dropping the line several times a day. It seems to have 11-12 db of
noise margin so I was wondering if I could get it to renegotiate the
line speed up a bit without dropping the line. Couldn't find a
documented command to do it though. Is this likely to be possible?

| | Easiest way to operate a computer remotely? by
Tim Downie
I know there are many ways to do this but I have a very tiny mind and need
something simple to enable me to provide PC support for my mother.
At present I have headbangingly frustrating conversations over the phone
trying to talk her through her problems (which are usually simple email
login problems) and it would be so much easier if I could access her PC and
remotely take control.
What's...

I wonder if anyone can help me figure this out.
I'm off to Athens for three weeks shortly and while there I want to work
on my wifi laptop. There's lots of hotels offering free wifi, but
there's a woman in Athens who is offering me a very nice studio flat at
a very good rate but it doesn't have wifi. It doesn't even have a

Woody
I got fed up with my wi-fi link persistently dropping out - all
of 4m range through one wall - so I bought a couple of Netgear
XE102UK powerline etherent modules (14Mbps).
The router is in the next room and the power sockets are adjacent
on the ring main.
I am on cable so my 'normal' speeds are about 7Mb download and
around 350-400K upload. When I first put the units on line

Can anyone recommend a good windows utility to continously check network
speed by chucking various packets between two computers (one Vista,

just the LAN.

My Set Top Box arrived, very happy. (STB)
OK the 1st Problem :)
It can see my computer (WORKGROUP-BORG-PC) through the LAN connected
direct to the computer but when I try and access the computer from the
STB it asks for a user name and password.
AFAIK I have no user name or password set up. It just logs straight in.

Hi,
I have a two PC network on my Windows XP home using lan on a Netgear
DG834GSP. I have set up the wireless section of the router so that I can
use the iPhone on Wi Fi. Is there any way I can add the iPhone to the
network so that I could access the shared printer and drives?
Any information gratefully received.
