| | Why would I be told "no carrier" when there are green lights at bothends? by
Henry Law
I have a Linux server (actually a Dell PC mini-tower) with three network
connections: one via the onboard socket and the other two via PCIe cards.
On one of the cards there is no network connectivity and "networkctl"
says "no-carrier". But there are green lights on the NIC and on the
switch port at the other end (yes I tried a different cable).
I thought a green light meant there was a...

| | Newbie confusion over too many DHCP server and firewalls by
Richard Treen
My old Belkin modem/router was simple enough for me to run a nice
little home LAN. Since then I've had ISP supplied hardware, the latest
of which, had a minimal GUI.
So I got my own separate modem and router.
I'm now accessing the Internet consistently at a good speeds, so no
complaints there.
It's just that when I look into finer configurations I find it quite
confusing. Like 2 DHCP servers,...

| | Network Speed by
Endulini
Hi Folks,
I've recently had installed some cabling to various rooms in the house and
have noticed, via a couple of network switches that indicate the connection
speed (i.e. 10/100/1000Mbps) that some of the new connections are not
running at 1000Mbps where I would expect. The interfaces are all rated at
1000Mbps and the cabling used was Cat 6. Is this likely to be down to how
the RJ45 plugs...

A long shot if anyone has come across these? Must be popular commercially.

Web-SMART Gigabit Ethernet Switch" Model 010-100-201-24
Made by Connectix, branded Networx.

For ease of cabling, we have a length of Cat5e cable that runs around
the *outside* of part of the house. There's a wall box at each end, one
of which is connected by a patch cable to the ADSL router, the other to
an ethernet switch. The cable is just a length of Cat5e run through
holes in the brickwork and stapled to the wall of the house by a
helpful local builder.
In the recent storms...

Hi, my apache web server is moaning about one local client (my son's)
trying to access non-existent pages, in a pattern that looks as though
W*Ws malware is present there. My son claims to have done a full avast
scan with nothing showing up. and disclaims knowledge of anything
unusual on his machine.
His machine has also tried to access my internet modem/router; it

Mike Halmarack[_2_]
I've always used modem/router combinations, usually the ones supplied
by ISPs. Now, I'm needing to have the modem in one room and the router
in another.
My ISP is "Utlilty Warehouse" which shows up as being TalkTalk in
online speed tests.
I've been looking at routers for a while and quite like the Asus
RT-N66U which is a router only.

Hi,
I've been trying to set up WOL on a Windows 8 system and am confident that
it's configured ok as I can confirm that the Magic Packets are getting

Internet (using a combination of Magic Packet software and TeamViewer). The
problem comes when I shut the system down or set it to sleep or hibernate.
Whilst I can wake it...

Sault,
When organisations, Governments and IT/Tech websites talk about internet
security they always talk of DOS, backdoors, trojans and general cyber

is the meta data collection by governments and commercial organisations.
E.g. talk of google collecting MAC addresses through their own software
