| | XP networking problems by
Mike the Brewer
Being well experienced in building/upgrading/repairing my own PCs I thought
home networking would be easy.......how wrong I was !
I have 3 machines in different rooms, all running XP sp3 and an HP laser
printer, all wired to a 4 port router.
I had no trouble networking the printer using the HP network install
software, it works fine from any of the 3 computers.
The problem is that after...

| | RJ54 to DB9 RS232 by
Peter Crosland
I bought one of these
eBay item #390167366953
Maybe I was naive but I expected this to contain a chip that did the
conversion. I plugged it in to a network and/or a Serial port but neither
was recognised. No driver disk was supplied, and I note that the DB9 has the
Cisco Systems Logo on it. The DB9 is moulded on so access without destroying
it is not possible.Any constructive suggestions as...

| | Computer name resolution problem on Vista by
Mortimer
I was setting up shared printing on a network with one XP PC (which shared
the printer attached to it) and two Vista PCs (one Home Basic, the other
Home Premium) which are configured to access this shared printer. The router
was a Linksys WAG54G.
The Home Premium PC could access the XP PC by its hostname, both for pings
and for net view, whereas the Home Basic PC could not resolve the...

| | Join 2 networks wirelessly by
Swarfmaker
I have 2 wireless routers, a Netgear DG834PN modem/router on a BT line and a
Netgear WGR614 router on a VirginMedia cable service.
The DG834PN uses address 192.168.0.1 and all connected devices have fixed
IP's The WGR614 uses address 192.168.1.1 and the only device connected at
the moment, a laptop, is given a dynamic IP. The laptop needs to be able to
see the other network via the WGR614...

| | File sharing? by
Geoff Mills
When using advanced file sharing on an XP (pro) network, does a remote
user need to also have a user account on the computer they want to
access?

| | Firmware upgrade went wrong, D-Link G624T by
BORG
Firmware upgrade went wrong, read through forums and seen about the
tiupgrade.exe method.
Found this file but when I run it it goes through to the 'please power
up the router'. and it hangs. Using the corrupted image mode, can't
access it through the IP number.
I'm running Win 7
Is this the problem ?

| | Network Hard Drive for backups by
Ken Tukyfriedturkey
I am looking to place (Ethernet) a Hard drive onto my router (BT HH2) for
backups.
Iomega and WD seem to be the forerunners but are there any other
recommendations.
I like making up my own USB HDD enclosures with drives. Is this an option
for Ethernet enclosures.
I don't want to run the backup software that comes with Iomega and WD units,

| | Tiscali news problems by
Mortimer
Does anyone know if Tiscali broadband connections block all access to news
servers at certain times of day? I get intermittent access to
news.individual.net from Windows Mail (Vista 32) over my girlfriend's
Tiscali connection whereas on my own PlusNet connection I can always get
access. I've tried alternative ports 8119 and 80 (with
server=port80.individual.net in the latter case). Even...

| | BT Router Security Setting by
Geoff Lane
I have been helping a friend set up his 2wire BT router for his small
business LAN.
One computer has been set to allow incoming VNC connections but I would
like to restrict all other traffic in and out but I cannot see how to
restrict outgoing ports.
It seems to be able to restrict outgoing traffic to all computers but
not individual computers.

| | Problem connecting wif'd computer to non-wifi'd computer. by
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°10 + on netbook
Up 'til recently I have been running two desk top computers through ethernet
connections and a netbook through wifi all networked through a 2wire
2700HGV hub. I have now moved the hub some distance away from the two desk
tops to improve my DSL connection (been getting many dropped connections of
late - so connection directly to the main 'phone socket is needed to improve
this situation). ...

| | Belkin Router as switch. Long waits by
Geoff Mills
Hi, I recently got my demoted Belkin router to work as a switch on my
LAN, thanks to the advice given here.
With DHCP off and a fixed IP address, the switch functions ok, except
that from switch power-up it takes almost a half hour before I can get
the 2 PCs on the other side of it to join the network.
Once available, initial access to shared folders on the LAN requires
an unusually long wait...

| | ADSL sync rate gradually decreases over several days by
Mortimer
My girlfriend's ADSL connection (Tiscali, using a Netgear DG834PN router)
gradually syncs at a slower and slower speed if the router is rebooted and
then left for a couple of days.
After a reboot, it gets around 2500-3500 kbps. Over the course of several
days, if I check the router's stats, the sync speed falls gradually: on one
occasion it might be 1500, on another 1000. The worst case is...

| | XP user accounts and file permissions? by
Geoff Mills
Hi, I've been running my home LAN of 5 PCs for several years.
My wife and daughter have been the only regular users other than
myself, so we've all had 'computer administrator accounts'
and the 'Sharing and Security' settings on all the drives have been
set to 'Allow network users to change my files'.
All very easy and functional.
Now the grand-kids are reaching the age where they want their...

| | How to force laptop to right network by
Barry
My wife has a laptop which four times out of five connects wirelessly to the
our router. Every now and then it fails to connect fully i.e. it detects a
network but does not connect. I have just realised what is happening; it is
finding someone elses network which, because it is secure, cannot connect.
How can I force it to pick up our router, I know I can search for networks,
select and...

| | Network just stopped working by
Trevor A
Normally I can access my sons PC and he mine via our home network. Using a
wireless router. He's on XP Home, me Vista. It's just stopped working. Both
computers show when I open the networking icon. I now get the message
Windows cannot access computer X, check the spelling of the name, otherwise
there might be a problem with the network.
Both are in same network and connect to the internet...

| | HomePlug Networking by
Swarfmaker
I've had a network running for a couple of years using these HomePlug
devices as well has Cat5 and wireless. Recently the computer in the Garage
was unable to connect to the network. I swopped devices about but have been
unable to get this computer to connect. This week the computer in one of the
bedrooms has shown the same fault. After some more testing it seems that
computers on the same...

| | Intermittant loss of browser usability (but tweetdeck still works) by
Tim Downie
Apologies if this isn't the best group (I'm open to suggestions) but my
daughter has an odd problem with her laptop.
About every 15 minutes or so her browser stops working. Doesn't matter
which browser she chooses, she can't access the internet with any of them.
The only way she's found to restore the connection is a full reboot (log off
& on again doesn't work). Whilst this is going on...
