| | BT Router - Remote Access by
Geoff Lane
Some work colleagues have a BT Business broadband connection using a
2wire router.
I would like to tweak some settings, probably after asking questions of
this group. I would like to be able to access the router from home so
that I can try or check any advice given.
I've gone through the various configuration pages and cannot find any
settings to allow remote access.

| | Basic NAS - any security? by
William4
Does anybody use a basic form of NAS out there with file security on it.
My very useful USB-drive home-made NAS works a treat apart from there being
no user security which I'd like to implement (as on a wi-fi enable lan)
- driven off the samba built-in server - but I can't enable controlled file
sharing or any form of locking I know of.
Few accesses, not for (secure) backup but file access...

| | VPN based on destination IP for a standalone device ? by
YahooGroupsKH@googlemail.com
I have a situation where a standalone device (not a PC) is accessing
several different destination servers. But when it accesses one
particular range of IP's I want to route that traffic (only) via VPN.
All other traffic I want to remain through my standard broadband
routing. The only configurable aspect of the device though is the
default gateway. No software can be installed on it.
Ideally I...

| | DNS weirdness - anyone else? by
ric
hi all,
got a weird issue here. the last 2 XP pro machines i rebuilt for
people, using the same venerable old build CD i've used for years,
have done odd stuff with DNS, breaking their internet connection. both
machines were different hardware and the build CD was the same.
i've setup the machine on my home network and connection via DHCP
works first time, everytime. my network's in the...

| | Network Printing by
Geoff Lane
I want to purchase a print server to save having to have a dedicated PC
switched on, preferably I would like to use the IPP protocol as I have
both Windows and Linux within my network.
Does anyone know if the IPP protocol will allow full printer functions,
eg paper sizes, trays, duplex, watermarks etc.

| | Zyxel P660HW - reboot problems by
Roger Morton
Hi
Just acquired this gadget. It's been rebooting itself once or twice a
day.
Initially I thought it was overheating - I had an ATA box sitting on
top of it. But moving it to a free airflow area didn't improve things.
Then I noticed the wireless LAN had defaulted to Channel 6, as had some
other wireless server (not mine) visible on the PC's wireless adapter.

| | ISP and more than PC by
Roaming Raven
Hello tech-savvy people,
I've a quesiton about the (hopeful) simplicty in creating a home
network, perhaps in regard to my ISP.
Right now, I access the net with a Well ADSL USB modem (model: well
asu-8000). But I want my laptop to access the net by WiFi and I don't
want to have to upgrade my service with my ISP. I'd rather not involve
them.

| | DIY NAS by
Stephen Howard
I have four laptops at home running W2000, each with their own
collection of photos, mp3s, etc, and it seems sensible to me to put in
place some kind of central storage via the Buffalo router.
I'm knee deep in old computers - so the question is, is it worth
turning an old compy into a NAS box or is a dedicated NAS box a better
bet ( bearing in mind the compy is a free solution, and I'm...

| | Netgear DG834G questions by
80/20
I have a PC wired to the modem/router.
I also have two laptops, one using it's own internal wireless
connector and the other using a Netgear WG111 USB connector.
Suddenly I am starting to have problems, the PC has connected fine for
most of the day with just a few outages, but both laptops have
struggled to connect and now neither of them can see the DG834G at
all, although they do see 3 other...

| | Orange (Old Freeserve) Webmail by
Geoff Lane
I've got an old freeserve pop email account, it attracts a lot of spam
which I have set on the webmail control panel to go straight in to a
spam folder.
I cannot appear to log in to my account to clear this folder, on trying
to log in the page just appears to hang.
I have tried different browsers as well as XP and Linux, all to no avail.
Anyone had a similar problem.

| | BBC Iplayer Security by
Geoff Lane
What are peoples views on security threats posed by peer to peer
computer connections, particulary the BBC's Iplayer utility.
I appreciate that various virus and spyware prevention programs need to
be kept up to date but one important criteria is to be careful what web
sites one visits.
If I understand it correctly if one views a BBC program using the
Iplayer then the data may not be coming...

| | Speedtouch 716WL router - firewall setup - how? by
tinnews@isbd.co.uk
I have a Speedtouch 716WL router which works well. However I want to
set up the firewall to block ssh except from specified IP addresses
and I just can't get it to work.
I have added a custom Firewall "Security Level" which allows me to add
firewall rules to the default ones.
I have then added a rule which looks like it should allow ssh
connections from a specified IP address on the WAN to my...
