router via usb. I have the network up and running, can share broadband

| | Does 128bit WEP slow your machine down? by
Tony
Since my previous post, I have managed to get 128bit WEP enabled on my
network. I do, however notice a slowing down of the system and wondered if
this was down to the higher 128bit encryption. Is it common for a fast
machine (2 GHz laptop) to notice a drop in performance when handling WEP.
Before setting up 128bit, I used 64bit WEP, which didn't appear to be
slowing things down at all...

| | Odd networking 'problem' by
Michael Mason
There must be an answer out there but I can't seem to think about what
terms to use when using search engines.
So... I'm using Windows ME, and when you go to the Control Panel and go
into Network, you see the list of network components that are installed.
If all is normal, you will see 'client for microsoft networks', an
ethernet card and below them, depending on the protocols you...

| | problem accessing other pc's by
JULIAN HALES
hi
Got the router up and running but having trouble accessing the other
machines.
All have access to the web, i can ping each machine fine, even play lan
games but my network places they dont see each other, i added a machine to
the lan to repair and that is being shown by 1 other machine.
Some are direct to router, some via a hub then router but that shouldnt make
any differance.

| | USB Wireless dongle thing by
brainz
Hiya
Just a quickie for those interested in wireless networking.
Tucked away in my maplin flyer was an advert for a "X-Micro" wireless usb
network adaptor.
802.11 standard 11Mbps. £19.99. Looks like a key fob that pops inot the USB
port. The cheapest
easiest option for wireless metworking I've seen yet. Tempted.
I found this blurb on the gadget at...

| | NIC Card Settings by
JStrummer
I have two computer on a LAN. One a WinXP Pro laptop, with Broadcom
integrated wireless; the other runs Win2K Server and has an Intel
10/100 Pro NIC Card. Both go through a DI-624 router from D-LINK.
My LAN is incredibly slow right now; copying files via network shares
frequently fail as a result of drives being dropped, and FTP does not
result in anything different.
I was thinking the problem...

| | login problem with win 98 networking by
mike
Hi all,
I have problems logging onto my home network using win 98se.
It seems the only way I can 'see' my computer in network neighborhood and
browse any shared folders is to go to Start button/ log off and then log on
as a different user.
When the computer asked me for a log on password, I then press return
without inputting a password and only then I can 'see' any computers
connected and
browse...

As a security precaution, I have turned off SSID beacons from my wireless
router. Problem is I cannot access the router anymore. What do I need to
do to enable me to connect again without enabling SSID?
Thanks

| | Turning on a PC over the network by
Netman ®
Anyone successfully do this? I'm trying to do this with a Shuttle box with a
USB Netgear WiFi adaptor. Is there only a chance of this working if it's
onboard and there is a BIOS option?
Or are there any other solutions?
Thanks

| | Something wiped my MAC address! by
AT
I had an old PC chips M810L mobo lying around, so built a little system
based on it for my daughter.
When setting up my router/firewall (Dlink DI-604) to share broadband for the
(now 3) PCs we have, I was setting up static DHCP for each, and the DI-604
reported the M810's MAC addy as 00-00-00-00-00-00!
The DI-604 works fine assigning an IP to that MAC... I'm well aware that all
MACs *should* be...

| | How secure is WEP? by
Tony
After about 6 months of running my whole network with no security at all, I
have decided to enable WEP.
I am now running 64bit WEP, but would like to know from someone that knows
about all this stuff, how secure is my connection now that I am running WEP?
More to the point, if someone was trying to get into my system (not that
they are) how long would it taken them to gain access? I would just...

Nick Cotter
Hi,
I'm having trouble configuring the DHCP range under Lan IP Setup of the
DM602 - has anyone run into the following problem?
No matter what I change, or even if I leave the defaults
(192.168.0.2-192.168.0.253) hitting the apply button gives me this
popup message: "ethernet ip is broadcast ip!" But I can't see which
setting is incorrect, if indeed it is.

| | wireless network two computers by
Chris Murray
Hi, Im new to the wireless networking thing and have a simple question - in
a conventional, wired network, it was possible to connect two machines with
a crossover cable ... could I connect a laptop to a computer wirelessly
using 54Mbps without using a wireless access point? Or are these always
needed?
Thanks,
Chris Murray
