Hi,
I have a box with an aerial and a socket marked "LAN" - which appears to
be one of these:
http://www.newlinkproducts.co.uk/prodinfo.asp?catID=2&prodID=8
However, it has no label and no indication of default settings.
I have tried resetting it with a computer connected to the LAN port set

| | VoIP Connection Method by
Geoff Lane
Hi Folks, hopefully I've got this followup-to business sorted now.
My only experience of VoIP is using earplugs and a mike via Skype so
connection was made by way of Skype's server.
I see many modern routers have a phone connection and I read somewhere
that VoIP connections can be made by dialing the remote IP address but
I'm not sure if this was manufacturer specific or an option will all...

Gordy
I use wpa tkip on my router and today see an extra entry on the dhcp list
that isnt any of my own systems.
Has someone gotten past the security or does the router give an ip to any
system that tries unsuccessfully to connect?
Thanks

I've currently got around 40GB of files copying from my PC (XP Pro) to my
brother's laptop (Vista Home Premium) running through my Linksys WRT54GS
wireless router - Cat5, not wireless.
It's currently chugging along at 1.64MB/Sec, has been going now for 2 hours
and is reporting another 7 hours to go!
Is this the going rate for that amount of data? Seems painfully slow to me
for a hard wire...

| | MTU Sizes by
Geoff Lane
Owing to an erratic internet connection my ISP has suggested I try the
following MTU settings;
1458, 1478 and 1500
My Linksys router's manual has the following suggestions;
Try this list of values, one value at a time, in this order, until your
problem is solved:

| | Software Firewalls? by
Rob
I am about to set up a friend of mine who has just received her modem(usb)
from the ISP. I have recommended that she uses a software firewall, but
having not used a software firewall for some years (I use hardware router
firewall), I am not sure what is best these days. In my experience of some
time ago, I found Zone Alarm to be very good. Is this still the case? Or
should I just enable the...

| | MTU Settings Location by
Geoff Lane
Recently I posted a thread asking about MTU and how to alter it.
I was given two references as follows;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283165
http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/280/
The microsoft gives a data location of Ndiswan\Parameters\Protocols\0
whereas the PC Tools page gives a location of Services\Tcpip\Parameters\
Interfaces\

| | Wake on wireless lan - for Desktop not Laptop! by
Neil
Folks,
I know that newer high-end Laptops have a wake on wireless lan feature, to
enable remote patching of software for example. Called WOWLAN
Does anyone know if this is possible the other way round? I want my Desktop
PC to wake up from standby mode when I switch on my Laptop, and when the
Laptop is switched off the desktop would then have to go into standby mode.
The laptop is fitted...

rainandsnow
I run a wireless network using a Buffalo Air Station wireless router -
which has WDS mode.
I want to extend my network to a location 150 meters away in another
building.
I don't really understand WDS, but if I connect up my current router to
a hi gain external aerial, buy another Buffalo router with WDS mode and
put it in the remote location (also with a hi gain external aerial) -
Would it...

| | MTU Maximum Transmission Units by
Geoff Lane
I have been advised by my ISP to try a different MTU in an attempt to
resolve a connection problem.
I'm running XP Home behind a Linksys WAG54G router, I've seen this MTU
setting somewhere but cannot find it at the moment.
Is it a computer, NIC or router setting?

I'm thinking of getting one of these on eBay but many are Sky-logoed
(i.e. came with Sky broadband). I'm not with Sky. Is there ANY
difference when the DG834GT and the Sky verson? If there is, is it
important or can I happily use one of these?

JamesB
I'm looking at replacing my mishmash of boxes pinched (er, borrowed) from
work. I want an all in one solution to be adsl modem, router, WAP, and also
do VPN tunnel endpoint to connect my network to the office.
I've been looking around, and the Zyxel 662 looks good, but it's a bit
pricey still, wheras the Billion 7402G is a fair bit cheaper and still seems
to do what I want. Thing is, i've...

| | Install WIreless AP in airing cupboard? by
Jon
Anyone done this? Only concern for me is the temperature. Whats the
temperature in an average airing cupboard? I don't own a thermometer.
The AP concerned is the linkysys 54G. The blurb for it says "operating
temperature 0-40 degrees celsius, storage temp 0-70 degrees".
Does this means it could reach temperature of 40 degrees when it's on,
but that you could install it in an ambient temp of...
