networked to a computer system that I built myself.
Problem is that on the Laptop the LAN led`s only stay on orange, whilst on
the base machine the LAN is both Green + Amber
The Base Machine is running WIN XP Pro, the Laptop WIN XP Home & SP1.

| | syncing files by
Dantes
Hi
Is there a good bit of preferably free software that will allow me to
sync files between my laptop and desktop over the network. I keep ending
up transferring files between one or the other when I am away from home
and have lost the latest version of one or two files in this way.
Ideally it would allow me to select who directories to sync to the
latest version of a file and perhaps even...

| | ICS Problems by
Will Light
I am having the same problems on my home network and on another one which I
set up for a mate.
The two systems are exactly the same.
i.e. Two computers, both running XP - at home XP Pro - at my mate's XP Home.
Computers are connected by ethernet cards and crossover cables.
I set up the internet connections on the Host computers. They work OK in
both cases. Mine is BT Openworld with the Alcatel...

I know there have been many posts about this error but I cannot find any
that solve my problem. Been looking for hours now and I am getting most
frustrated.
I am running Office Mail as a mail server on a Win98se PC. I use Outlook 98
to send/collect mail from a client PC (also running Win98se). I can send and
collect mail without any problem at all - until I have to reboot that client
PC (for...

| | Wireless help needed. by
MongolHunter
I currently have a win2000 server running ICS which acts as a firewall /
file server etc. The server does what it needs to and allows the 2 PCs
connected via cabling to connect to the internet. The problem I have is that
I want to add wireless to this setup. The server has replaced an old
Wireless Router that stopped working however I would prefer it if the
wireless connection came from one of...

Hi,
We just had cable broadband installed in our flat and we want to share it
over the network. The network setup is 3 PCs connected through a switch, and
the modem is connected too. At the moment, we seem to have two networks
going, one PC and the modem can see each other and the other two can see
each other. The one PC seems to be getting it's IP from the modem (82.x.x.x)
and the two others...

| | Using Netgear DG824M Wireless ADSL Modem Router by
Wilfred Francis
Having a spot of bother with my Wireles ADSL Modem Router.
For the past seven months I have been using a DG814 ADSL Modem router with
two computers running W2K, connecting to my ISP (Freeserve) without any
problems. I now want to add a Laptop(W2K) to the network. Rather than put in
more cabling I decided to splash out on a DG824M Wireless ADSL Modem router
and adapter. On installing the router...

| | Home/remote Wireless broadband - where to start? by
Ben Nunn
Hi,
Looking for advice on what gear to buy to achieve my desired result.
Currently have a desktop PC with an Alcatel ADSL modem and 512k broadband
from Pipex.
Within the next month, we'll be getting two laptops - one will be a brand
new company-supplied high-spec Dell Latitude 1.7Ghz Mobile Pentium, the
other will be a second-hand lower spec machine.

| | AP Station List Status by
Geoff Lane
My Netgear 54mbps Access Point shows two status options against
connections within my stations list.
I get Associated and Authenticated, trouble is they keep changing and
will do so whilst I am actually viewing the Access Point configuration
page.
What do they mean and why should they change.

| | Workaround for ADSL microfilter not working by
Ian Mayo
Hi all,
I've got a bog-standard BT ADSL line. The nice chap at BT put in a little
box above the main phone socket down in the hall, laid the cable along the
wall, through the ceiling to an ADSL network point in the home office.
The home office is now going up a floor into the loft. Moving a phone
extension into the loft is easy, so I'm experimenting with a little ADSL
microfilter...

selective override
Unlike most, it would seem, I have had no big problems with ICS. I run
a host PC connected to BT broadband (Win ME), and two laptops (one ME
one XP) without all the hassle that some have, and ICS does the job.
However.....
My teenage daughter has a liking for certain resource-hungry games,
and she HAS to play these on the host PC because it has the best video
card. Some of these games cause ICS...

| | Linksys PPS1UW print server problem by
Jonathan Ball
I just got a Linksys PPS1UW 1-port USB print server.
It is connected to a Linksys BEFSR41 DSL router.
I have two HP printers: a brand-new OfficeJet 6100
("all-in-one": printer/scanner/fax/copier), and a much
older DeskJet 970 Cse. The intent of the print server
is to share the OfficeJet 6100 between two computers
(Windows XP Pro and Windows ME), and retire the old
DeskJet.

| | Audio setup for home office by
Ian Mayo
Can anybody recommend an audio setup for my home office which would allow me
to hear 5.1 audio from my PC, CD's from my PC, and radio? My PC has 5.1
optical output.
So, I could buy a radio card for the PC, together with a 5.1 amplifier and
have the whole thing controlled from the PC. Alternatively I could look out
for a cheap home cinema amp/dvd player which has built-in radio, and just
use...

The story so far:
We have a wired peer-to-peer network of up to 6 PCs (running a mixture
of Win2K, Win XP Home, and Win98se), installed in a home office. The
network shares an internet connection via an ISDN router (we're not
yet broadband enabled). The office is in a separate building from the
house, about 5m apart. Walls of both are solid stone (house is a
converted barn, office a converted...

Hi
Just setup a small wireless network of 3 computers, all is working
fine amazingly.
One of the computers is left on 24 / 7 but lately I've noticed it's
crashed and needs a reset to get back working. Is there any software
that would monitor each computer on my network and highlight if they
are working or not.
