In an effort to cut down on clutter at home, I would like to set up a
wireless
internet connection . Currently I have a desktop, laptop (arrived today -

| | Wireless Fall Back by
Geoff Lane
I've got a small home network which consists of wired and wireless
sections.
The range is very eratic on my wireless section and nowhere near what
the manufacturers suggest is possible (in ideal conditions).
I live in a 1930s brick built bungalow so there is no special
insulation causing problems.
My Netgear PC card appears to work OK with my Netgear 54mbps Access

| | DHCP and Wireless problem by
Ben Dyer
Oh how I love networks... right, can anybody help, I seem to have a
funny networking problem.
I think the problem is down to the DHCP side of my router but I am not
too sure. I have a D-Link ADSL modem (DSL-300G+) connected to my Netgear
wirelessly router (WGR614), this is then ethernet connected to my PC and
wirelessly connected to my laptop.
Since both the modem and the router are DHCP...

| | mbps transmit and receive by
Geoff Lane
My Netgear 54mbps Access Point has a number of settings regarding 11b
or 11g gettings as well as AUTO.
I can also set various speeds as well as BEST.
Why would one want to transmit at a slower speed if the adapter cards
all appear to have 'automatic fall back'.
Reason I ask is that my current wireless network is very eratic,
unless I have a full signal I'm getting problems.

| | Netgear Incorrect MAC addresses by
Geoff Lane
Anyone experienced Netgear products reporting incorrect MAC addresses.
I'm on my second Netgear PC card WG511, the first had to be returned
as it would not connect and was reporting varying MAC addresses.
The replacement is working OK but I'm now getting the incorrect MAC
addresses reported again.
I ran XP's Network Diagnostics and it reported my card as follows;

A friend of mine has a USB ADSL modem.
If he buys a router is he able to share internet connections or does
the modem have to go in to the router for this to be successful.
He has ethernet connections on his computer.

| | computer networks becoming more critical to businesses than ever before? by
CRM
Hi,
I have a point on which I have been thinking on for sometime -
Will the advances in computer technology, and the growing importance
of the Internet in commercial transactions, have resulted in computer
networks becoming more critical to businesses than ever before?
Sometime back, I read a whitepaper in www.techieindex.com also on
this, which was quite informative. I would appreciate if...

| | Move to client server - Linux or Microsoft by
Steve Sinclair
Hi - I've used the feedback and advice etc. from this newsgroup to help me
get a hybrid P2P Microsoft network up and running with W2K and XP Pro
machines. It's been going for a while now and all OK.
Just for the sake of it I'm thinking of trying a client-server set up but
couldn't justify the cost for MS server licences. I haven't investigated
the costs for Linux software to run as the server....

| | Can I use BNC cable for RJ45? Can I extend BNC cable? by
Anon
Hi, I have an existing BNC cable hard-wired into my apartment but find BNC a
constant nightmare to diagnose faults on. I also have a new Sony Vaio which
has a built-in RJ45 socket, which would be nice to use instead of a separate
BNC PCI card. Can I use the BNC cable and modify the plugs at each end to
work with RJ45 network cards?
As a separate question, I need a bit more length on the BNC...

Bluto
Anyone know of any 3-in-one devices - ADSL modem, router (3-4 port RJ45)
and wireless access point? Plus, any experience of using them?
So far I know of the Netgear DG824M.
Cheers,

| | Is there such a thing as a USB to ethernet adaptor? by
Gary Glencross
I've been given a present of a D-Link wireless router.
I already have a network of 2 PCs and wanted to add my laptop wirelessly.
I have a broadband USB modem though, and the new wireless router only has a
WAN port for connection of an ethernet modem.
How do I get round this? Can I buy some kind of simple adaptor which
changes my USB plug into an ethernet one?

Trouble is they have AOL.
How does one enable ICS with AOL, I'm not sure if it even shows up as

Blues Punk
I recently bought a 3com OfficeConnect 11g WAP and a Belkin 54g PCI
card, both supposedly supporting the 802.11g standard.
Well I've had a lots of "fun" trying to get them to talk to each other
in anything other 802.11b.
I've updated every conceivable driver and firmware, been through every
single setting I can find about a dozen times, both with and without
Belkin Tech Support on the line. ...
