| | Difference between server and peer to peer? by
TX2
I can set up a basic peer to peer (P2P) network without any problems
usually, and when doing so for a family friend the other day, he asked
me a question I couldn't really answer.
What is the difference between a server, and P2P??
I think what he meant was domain 'type' networking as opposed to P2P.
It came about because he happens to have a (I didn't ask) Windows 2000
server CD on his desk.

| | AP gateway Address by
Geoff Lane
My Netgear Wireless AP has a default gateway setting of 0.0.0.0
Everything appears to be working OK but I am curious as to what the
setting should be.
Steve Winograd, in a reply to a post by me in relation to NIC gateway
settings suggested it may have referred to a 'Route Table' as 0.0.0.0
is not a valid IP address.
At the moment I am using manual settings (Not DHCP), my computers are

I'm just about to install a wireless network at home, following our BT
exchange being upgraded to DSL - Hurrah!
However, I know I need to buy 11b because that's all that the Tivo
will take but I'd rather have 11g around the house for speed etc. I
understand that there have been problems with the network speed
reducing to the lowest common denominator and want to know if this has
now been sorted...

file on the large HDD on the desktop? ...

| | Home wireless network unavailable after connecting to work network - Windows XP Linksys Router by
Marc J. Osborne
Hello possible helpers!
My situation initially:
A desktop Dell, my wife's Dell laptop, a cable modem, and a Linksys wireless
router connecting the cable modem to the desktop. The router broadcast a
wireless signal that my wife's laptop, and mine from work, could pick up
anywhere on the property. We could share files and print remotely and
everything worked well from the wireless networking...

Tony Doherty
Has anyone out there had experience with ICS and the "BT Connect" product
(BT Openworld for Business)?
I have shared a dial-up connection between 2 PCs and all works relatively
well. However, the 2nd PC cannot successfully action the dial-up connection.
It is able to request the 1st PC's modem to dial out and commence training
on the line, but each time the connection fails during authorisation...

| | Network bridge on XP kills wireless transfer rate. by
Littleboy
I have an ad-hoc 54g wireless LAN setup using a Belkin PCI (Win XP
Pro) and a Belkin notebook (Win2000) card - no access point. The
desktop PCI card is installed in my wired LAN ICS machine.
When the ad-hoc network link is running unbridged peer to peer, the
transfer rate is lightning fast and the rate doesn't drop from 54Mbps
with each PC having excellent signals. Great for file transfers -...

| | Antenna by
Geoff Lane
I've got a Netgear Wireless system.
I've noticed Netgear UK have recently launched a range of antenna but
they seem specific to cetain models (Not mine).
Looking at the aerial connection, it is only screw in (on the AP), why
would they be specific to certain models.

I need to add PC3 onto my home network. Currently it is connected with a
trailing Cat5 for occasional use but it's untidy and difficult to hide
permanently.
I'd like to use wireless AP from the wired router to PC3 but that's from
the downstairs back to upstairs front of an old house. It would be an
expensive mistake to buy the kit and find the coverage is useless.
Question - I have a...

| | one way TCP/IP ? NetBEUI OK over 211.g by
bof
I have a wired network with a laptop running Win ME, a desktop running
Win XP, a Vigor 2600 ADSL router, all this works fine.
I've just added a Netgear WG602 WAP to the wired network and a Netgear
WG511 PCI card to the laptop.
Having unplugged the wired connection from the laptop, the wireless
network seems to work fine under NetBEUI, I can move files both ways
between the machines.

I intend soon to upgrade my small home network to broadband.
Obviously the routers take over the firewall functions normally
carried out by the computer (Limited I appreciate) so I am wondering,
do any of the routers contain cooling fans and as such emit any
audible noise.

| | Wirelss DSL Modem/Router - how to find matching products? by
Tiny Tim
I would like to get a wireless DSL modem/router to which I will connect two
laptops wirelessly, an XBOX by wire and possibly a server by wire in the

into the ADSL filter on my phone line.
I would like to scour the market for my options and best prices but do not
know what the best search terms would be to uncover this...
