| | home network on a budget... by
Dave
Hiya
can I just clarify I couple of points:
1) people are saying all I need is a crossover cable to share internet
access, is this correct if one machine is win 98se and the other XP?
2) I have seen it suggested that I will be able to share my current dial up
internet access, is that true with a cross over cable?
If the answer to all over this is yes, what advantages is there to having a
router?

| | home network on a budget: beginers question. by
Dave
Hi
I'm about to try and set up a network for my two computers and possibly my
laptop. I don't have broadband yet but plan to do so in the future and would
want shared internet access for all machines. I would want MSN and email to
work from all machines, share printers, possibly a scanner and share files.
From reading the net it seems I will need a router rather than a switch.
Looking around the...

up the other pc in that room, but I hear that what I have needs to be all
changed as it's the wrong type of cable, and I need a hub or router - could
anyone point me - or...

Gary Glencross
I set up a home network successfully more than a year ago and it worked
perfectly until last week.
The host is a high spec WinXP machine. It is networked to, and shares its
broadband internet connection with my older Win 98 SE machine.
Now when I try to access the internet using the Win 98 machine it loads at a
trickle...about 100 times slower than dial up. I can see the files on the
Host...

I need a 30m crossover cable for a network extension I am putting in.
The only place I have found that sells a pre-assembled cable is
Tekheads, but they then went and sent me a patch cable!
I would prefer to not have to crimp my own on this occasion.
Anyone suggest a good supplier?
Although, a good supplier of networking tools and accessories would also
be welcome!
