If anyone out still has some info I would be very grateful.

I am connecting a computer running Win XP Home with two running Win ME,
via a broadband router LAN hub and the Windows Home Networking wizard --

The XP computer used to run ME and the three-computer network worked
fine. Now it takes 30-40 secs after clicking on a shared drive in My

The easiest way to go about this would be to get a wireless access point
with built in router, you can pick one up for about £45 on Dabs, I got a
Adaptec one a few months ago, it had a 4 port router as well as the
wireless..
With the setup you have I would think you could still do it, though I
haven't tried. If your PC1 is the pc connected to the internet then all you
have to do is enable...

I have a windows 98 machine peer to peer networked to 2 other machines,
yet I cannot get a user name prompt at boot in order to log onto the

The win98 laptop on the same network always throws up a username and
password login (whereby if you pressed cancel you'd still load the
desktop, but wouldn't be able to browse the network)
However, the desktop machine refuses to...

Does anyone know of any planned 802.11g devices which can be attached

I've googled and can't find any :/

Hey all,
Have been trying to connect two PCs on an ad-hoc network which have
cards from different manufacturers. I've checked that their on the
same frequency and that their both set to ad-hoc, but other than
poking about with the channel numbers on them i have no idea what to
do.
Should SSIDs be the same, or different?
Any help for a complete newbie would be greatly appreciated!

All machines can see each other on the network, and also share printers
without issue (I have 2 printers connected to 2 different machines)

That looks fine. The choice is whether to use a combined modem/switch or
to use separate boxes. If you expect to hook up more than 4 RJ45 devices
it's probably best to use separate boxes.

| | Computer does not see network! by
Ivan Allan
Hi all:
My computer can not see the other computer in the network. And will not
automatically re-connect to the other computer anymore.
Manually however, I can access the other computer through network
Neighborhood, and transfer files etc., but explorer does not see it.
Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

"Wake on LAN" is useful. too.
Provided all your machines are capable of the BIOS being set to LAN BOOT,
you can start any shut down machine remotely. This, in combination with a
remote shutdown utility has saved me miles of walking.....

Apparently a lot of people have been having this problem and have been
unable to solve it. I suspect it's due to an update of some kind.

Fatman Fred
It's all too confusing!
So I'm looking into WiFi and I think that I need an Access Point for my
Desktop and a PCMCIA card for my laptop. Then I find out that I don't need
an access point for my desktop as its not connected to a wired network and
I'm only ever going to have 2 PC's.
So I am now thinking of buying the Netgear WG311 PCI card for my desktop.
