Geoff Lane
I've got a problem with my daughter's Pipex adsl connection; she's
been away from her home address for 6 months so whe cannot specify
when this occured as there were problems early in the year but I
thought it was a dodgly phone cable.
She has the old 256Kb service but the connections are now very eratic,
the router shows the connection as dropping and pages time out when
attempting to...

| | USB ethernet print server by
Simon Finnigan
Hi all,
i`ve got a friend who wants to put 2 USB printers onto his house network
(one of them is a multifunction device, but I don`t think he needs to be
able to scan with it). I`ve had a look but can`t find anything that would
elt him do this in a single box for sensible money. Anyone got any
suggestions?
Thanks!

| | Zyxel Prestige 660H or Netgear DG834 ? by
Kev
I'm not a newbie and have read up on these routers including the manuals.
Both are said to have proper SPI firewalls, etc, which is a must but I've
read conflicting comments about whether they are truly stealthy (eg. what
the checks at grc.com say). Also, a scan through the manuals suggests that
the Zyxel is more sophisticated (maybe except for VPN support).
Is there any reason in...

| | Interesting DSL Router by
Geoff Lane
I've got a home network behind a NAT router with an older WEP AP
plugged in to the router.
I would like to buy a printer server but they are all around the £40+
plus mark.
Strangely USR do an interesting device ( http://tinyurl.com/epk7t ).
It is a 4 port DSL router with Print server, firewall and a serial
port for an external backup modem, all for under £40.

| | Wired or Wireless by
Paul Sweeney
I am in the process of adding a major extension to our home and this is the
perfect time to get some cables in the wall if I am going to do it at all.
My question, I have read allot of damning reports about Wireless Networking
and unreliable Routers etc.
Should I go wireless?
Should I install one of the commercially available Home Networking systems?

| | Mains Networking by
britrail
I want to switch from dial up to broadband but the room my computer is
in does not have a telephone socket, and I wondered if using mains
networking would be a good solution and better or not than a wireless
network. Which would be the least intrusive. At present I just use an
extension lead which would not be practical with broadband.
Which would be the least expensive solution. Being able to...

| | Laserjet 4m as network printer? by
AP
Is it possible/easy to instal an HP laserjet 4m on a small LAN? There's no
rj45 socket on the printer. Would I need to fit a network card, or
alternatively, is there such a thing as a cable with rj45 on one end and an
LPT-type plug on t'other? Thanks for any advice.

| | NIC Firmware Update by
Geoff Lane
I appreciate many Access Points and modems have facilities to update
firmware but can firmware be updated on WiFi adapters?
Reason I ask is that I have a Netgem I-Player+ digital TV viewer which
allows WiFi access to my network.
I have a Linksys USB adapter but only a later version firmware of the
same model can be used.

| | Warning DLink is crippling its DI-604, and maybe other products too!!! by
kaltufas@netscape.net
Hi,
I have recently bought a DLink DI-604, and wanted to use it in my
network. Soon, I have bumped into the crippleware, that DLink has
introduced into this product: The subnet mask is stuck at
255.255.255.0. My business network uses a different subnet mask
255.0.0.0. I have tried to set it up, but it didn't allow me, giving me
an error message that the subnet mask must be 255.255.255.0...

| | Connection paradox by
Barry
Can anyone tell me how it is possible to have a network connection yet not
be able to use OE or IE. Most of the time my connection is fine but I get
the above phenomena occasionally, particularly when the connection is not
being used. I thought I would be able to have the router permanently on and
connect around the house when I want to.
If I switch the router off and on again the connection...

| | Utilities to scan for wireless interference? by
Dr Zoidberg
Does anyone know of any utilities (preferably free) that will let you scan
the relevent frequencies for sources of interference. This may be other
people's access points or it may be other electrical equipment generating
noise.

I have a Netgear DG834G wireless router/modem/coffee maker, which has
given me sterling service for the past two years. Today I moved

by unplugging it, it will connect for a couple of minutes, then drops
the connection with any kind of activity (such as downloading
newsgroups or web browsing). The wireless part seems fine and...

| | TVL Demands License for Laptop and WiFi by
CJB
I've just had an aggressive demand from our 'friends' the TVL for a new
laptop I've just purchased with Windows Media Centre and a t.v. card.
However the t.v. reception and display is so damned awful that I am
seriously thinking of getting the t.v. card removed. This test was at a
location that is IS licensed for t.v. reception, but anyway I'm damned
if I'm going to pay for a second license just...

My phone (Nokia E61) can see my wireless network at home and I'm trying
to configure the phone to use the network but I'm wondering if anyone
knows where I enter the WPA Passphrase in the phone as having read the
manual there doesn't seem to be an obvious place to enter this.
I've tried putting it in the WLAN security settings pre-shared key field
but still no joy. I've set it up to...

| | Turning on PC by
Peter Andrews
What mod can I make to a PC (Win 98) that will allow it to power up when
mains is applied and not be dependant upon the power button on the PC. I
intend to place it in a remote location for secure back ups, applying power
using an X10 module and operating the PC using VNC - so controlled shut down
is achievable. I did think that holding the power button permanantly on -
but if I do that it...
