Compatibility problem between Belkin wireless card and Netgear Wireless N router? by Mortimer
Are there known compatibility problems between Belkin Wireless G cards and Netgear DG834N (note the "N") routers? My sister is having a very strange problem with her network which is related to one PC. From that PC she can reliably access the internet (web, email) and she can ping other PCs on the network. But other PCs can only intermittently ping that PC. All the PCs are connected by...

Phone call causes ADSL to drop out? by Biggles
Has anyone had a similar problem to this: Since BT OpenReach did some work outside of my house a couple of months ago, my BB bandwidth has dropped from 5-6.5 Mb/s to 2-3 Mb/s, and as low as 512Kb/s at times. When making a phone call, the sound of the router negotiating can be heard (sounds much like an analogue modem), albeit very feintly. Making a phone call on the same line causes the...

Intermittent router problem by GB
I have a Belkin F5D8230-4 wireless router, and a speedtouch 586 broadband modem. This all works very nicely nearly all the time. However, every so often, the connection between the modem and the router gets partially broken. It continues to pass through NG information and some games seem to work, but not web browser stuff. Also, I can log into the wireless router, but not the modem. This...

Telnet on Vista by Mortimer
A really stupid question: is there a telnet program or Windows equivalent on Vista - as used when investigating email problems and you need to telnet to the POP and/or SMTP servers? I couldn't find one from the Command Prompt and a Find on hypertrm* didn't find anything either.

Ping and Tracert by Geoff Lane
I was under the impression that Ping and Tracert were similar utilities with tracert giving a wee bit more information about the connection. Why is it then, if I ping bbc.co.uk I get response times of around 30ms whereas if I tracert the same address it appears to take much longer. Geoff Lane

What practical range does one get with wireless networking? by tinnews@isbd.co.uk
OK, I acknowledge that pretty much "how long is a piece of string" but I can be a *bit* more spcific! :-) I have a Draytek Vigor 2820n router sitting on my desk with its three aerials. If I stick the matching Vigor N61 wireless USB adapter in a laptop (which I don't have at the moment) what sort of range am I likely to get? The house has brick walls, will the signal get through an internal...

o2 BB - Security Issues by Paul
Just got myself an o2 connection after many years on Zen (first at 2MB then the 8MB package). o2 Speed and reliability seems ok so far however, their ideas on security are scary. First, they give out your o2 username on every outgoing email sent via their smtp servers (which require authentication), it goes something like this... Received: from main.lan (93.96.21.112) by mail.o2.co.uk...

Using tow LAN connectors on desktop mainboard by Roger R
My XP desktop mainboard (Asus) has two ethernet LAN connectors. One 100T Mb speed, the other a gigabyte speed. Mainboard manual has no guide for implementation of these connectors. I thought to use the 100 speed for connection to router and then internet, and to use the high speed connector to link to a Win98 machine that I have fitted with gigabyte speed card. This doesn't seem to work...

Wireless networking question by tinnews@isbd.co.uk
I have two ADSL connections, each with a router connected (physically at the moment, with CAT5) to the same subnet. I have one router as 192.168.1.1 and the other is 192.168.1.254. I 'share' the ADSL simply by making one router the default gateway for one computer on my network and the other router is the default gateway for the other main user's computer. It all works OK. Can I link the two...

ADSL router recommendations wanted by tinnews@isbd.co.uk
I know this has been asked many times before but things move one and new hardware becomes available, etc. I'm after an ADSL router for my home connection, my main requirements a- A good and reasonable easy to configure firewall. Wireless isn't a major use, I'm all wired, but a wireless port might be useful.

"Call filter" and "Data filter", firewall clarification wanted please by tinnews@isbd.co.uk
My new Draytek Vigor 2820n has what it calls "Call Filter" and "Data Filter" in its firewall setup. The manual says:- Call Filter - When there is no existing Internet connection, Call Filter is applied to all traffic, all of which should be outgoing. It will check packets according to the filter rules. If legal, the packet will pass. Then the router shall “initiate a...

Can't get FTP to work on Zyxel 660H router by tinnews@isbd.co.uk
I'm trying to configure a Zyxel 660H router to allow FTP to a system on my Soho LAN. I have the Zyxel configured so that all systems on the LAN can see the outside world OK, i.e. a basic default ADSL configuration. In addition I have got outside access to my web server on port 80 and my ssh server on port 22 working (with the ssh acces restricted to a few trusted IP addresses).

new wireless setup on WinME by Only Me
Hi I would appreciate any help on this. I have finally decided to go wireless and have been trying to hook up my two laptops with a Plexus Wireless 54Mbps ADSL2+ Router and its corresponding USB adapter/dongle thingy. Everything works just fine with my XP laptop. The problem starts when I try to install the USB Adaptor Controller and Driver Setup.exe on the ME machine. I can't (details...

Remote Admin 2.1 and Port Numbers/Firewall? by John
Just a query to anyone who is familar with Remote Administrator 2.1... I wonder if the program can be set up to work on Port 80, so it will still work with a router that has the default Radmin ports blocked? I am wanting to use Radmin on a few computers that the firewall staus is not known and wonder if there is a way to make Radmin work on all systems, even if a firewall is present? I have...
