| | Slow network speed? by
BJH
Hi
I have a small network of 3 x Win98SE machines and 1 x WinXP SP2 Home
machine all connected together using a 3COM ADSL Wireless Router.
Connection to the internet via the router works fine with speeds around
50KB/s on a 512k connection. But speeds on the LAN between local PCs are
dreadful, generally around the 1-3KB/s.
I have checked the TCP registry settings, MTU is 1500, Tcp Receive window

My brother and his wife will soon be moving into a caravan in a field in the
middle of Somerset while they build a farm around it.
They want to run a business from a website selling their farm produce but
have no telephony connections and BT want £20K to set it up for them!
My question is, what are their options? They have a good mobile signal.
Would a handheld computer of some flavour and...

Is it possible to have, say, 2 wireless laptops that will connect wirelessly
with each other in the absence of a router etc?
I know there are different modes (ad-hoc, infrastructure) but I don't know
if these apply ....
What i want to be able to do is have 2 users in the same room, who can
'interact' wirelessly with each other transferring files (Word docs etc)
without the need for them to...

'Googling' leads me to believe 100m is the maximum length for a single run
of CAT5 network cable. I need to run 50m at least, from one PC to another.
Wireless isn't an option due to location and the absolute reliability of
connection required. Is 50m of CAT5 likely to cause me any major issues?

Hi!
I am trying to access a webdav server on my home computer from the
outside world but am running into a few difficulties.
I am running Apache, with mod_dav on OS X and have no trouble
connecting to this locally. However, I cannot connect from work, or via
a web proxy from home. I have a NetGear DG834G router with http being
forwarded to my computer.

The W 98 worked fine when on ISDN but can't get it to work with ADSL.
Occasionally ojn start up it does work but mostly it doesn't.
Switching off Zonealarm is no help.
It connects to the router but I am unable to access the router using MIE.

I'm looking in to extending the range of my home network system,
currently I have a few dead spots where the WiFi doesn't reach
reliably so am thinking of a ' mains ethernet ' system to extend.

n_scott@btinternet.com
I'm trying to help a client out with their home networking setup and
would be gratefull if someone could answer the following question: -
When connecting a PC to a BT Voyager 200 Router via a USB cable, does
this create a dial-up or LAN type network connection on the PC?

Hi.
Want to set up a home wireless network - considering Linksys WRT54GSUK
wireless-G broadband router & Linksys WMP54G-UK wireless-G PCI adapter. I
have only Windows98SE - can anyone advise me if this kit will work with
Win98SE? If it won't, any advice about what kit to buy instead?
Thanks

Martin Underwood
I have a customer whose PC is running Windows 2000 Service Pack 1. Does
anyone know whether the WG311T (which supports W2K) has any minimum service
pack requirements? The Netgear web site and the data sheets just say
"Windows 2000" without specifying whether it requires upgrade to a given
service pack.
Also, do I understand their web site correctly? To get WPA encryption, you
need the...

If the main reason you are considering a data warehousing is to get around
the difficulties caused by a dysfunctional transaction processing system, do
the work of costing how much it will fix the transaction processing system
before you make the data warehouse decisionIt may not be surprising that the
primary motivation for the construction of many data warehouses is to get
around the...

Thanks to the advice received from people here, I'm now almost ready to

At the point where the BT cable enters the house the IT bloke has
gathered together the mass of cables which were sticking out of the
wall and connected them (somehow) inside a small grey cabinet on the
wall. There are now four computer points by this grey box,...

| | NAT Security by
Geoff Lane
I appreciate that NAT is not an actual firewall but is supposedly very
secure.
If you operate a server (or DMZ) behind a NAT router I assume someone
with a port scanner would get the address of your router and the open
machine. Would this not give them an opening into the local network.

My wireless network is centred around a Belkin ADSL modem/Wireless
router, and most of the time works fine.
Occasionally, the data light on the router will go out after a period
of inactivity. The network still operates, but with no internet
access. Usually, when you then open up a browser in one of the
computers (an office PC or one of up to three laptops, all with
wireless adaptors), the...
