the 60W light bulb misconception by Lenny
http://nomasts.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=50&Itemid=116 A familiar piece of misinformation quoted by mobile phone operators is that the emissions of a mobile phone mast are comparable to that of only a 60W light bulb, and thus equally harmless. Quite apart from the fact that the light from a 60W light bulb can be harmful to a person with photo-sensitive epilepsy, if it is...

Strange VoIP behavior after storm by ian
My daughter has ADSL and a VoIP phone (SNOM-300). This combination has worked well for a long time. Recently there was a violent storm in her area, and the phone line went dead. A few days later the fault was repaired, and everything appeared normal again. However, something strange is happening: -- Her VoIP phone works fine, but ONLY when the analog POTS phone is off-hook.

ADSL slow to connect by Nick Austin
I found out recently that if I power cycle my ADSL modem that it takes hours to re-establish the connection. I rarely power-cycle (the modem is on a UPS) so this problem may have be present for a while. However once the connection is made it stays up. The phone side of things works perfectly. I'd appeaciate advice on whether this is an ISP problem, a line problem or if my modem is about to...

OTish Anonymous Domain Registration by Stephen@mailinator.com
I have a .com registered in my own name. The registration details show my home address and mobile number and obviously this info is available to anyone who's bothered to look. Should I be concerned about having this pesonal info available to the world? I was thinking of changing to an anonymous domain reg service but I'm not sure.

ADSL connection dropping at 01:40 precisely every night by Andrew
I have had an on-going connection problem with my Pipex ADSL. A month or so back the connection was dropping constantly and I had periods of a day or two with no connection. This appears to have now been resolved but during the testing Pipex noted that my connection was dropping at exactly 01:40 am every night. It drops and reconnects repeatedly at about 4-6 second intervals for...

New to broadband by dido22
Hello, I've just switched to broadband after many years on dial-up. There are some basics I'm not clear about, can you help please ? 1) With dial-up I had to 'connect' to the internet whenever I needed access, and I could 'disconnect' once I'd finished. With broadband I am connected automatically as soon as I switch everything on (I think), but can I 'disconnect'. Or am I only connected...

Upgrade BTBusiness Broadband by reverse-ekralc_j@talk21.com.invalid
My wife's company currently has BTBusiness Broadband with a BT Voyager 220v connected to a single PC running Linux. They need to add another PC which will be supplied by their parcel carrier (which will be dedicated to organising collection/deliver of parcels). The new PC will be in a warehouse building some 150-200ft from the phone line which provides internet access. Is it simply a matter of...

How does ADSL MAX differ from regular 512Kb, 1Mb or 2Mb broadband ? by jdr.smith@virgin.net
How does ADSL MAX differ from regular 1Mb or 2Mb broadband ? Other than the obvious speed difference. Is it as reliable as regular broadband if used to underpin a hardware site to site VPN ? Does the ISP make much difference ? especially if used as a site to site VPN transport ?

SMS Gateways by Linker3000
Hi Knowledgeable ones, I am tasked with setting up an SMS gateway for appointment and vaccination reminders for a chain of veterinary clinics. Monthly/yearly volumes have not been quantified yet and I will contact the usual major telecoms players about this, but any input on options would be appreciated - we're with Vodafone for our business phones (already getting info from them), have an...

How to setup bridge mode? by Adam Lipscombe
Folks, I have BT Max ADSL a FritzBox 7140 VOIP router and a 2Wire 2700 HGV (aka BT Business Hub) router. On my long line the 2wire router syncs @ 1900, much faster than the FritzBox (@ 800-900). This makes a considerable difference to the download speed. But I need the VOIP functionalty in the FritzBox.

Speed/Line Testing by TheScullster
Hi all I have posted one or two questions to this group and have received excellent assistance which has enabled the setup of networked (wired) broadband. Dipping in to the group I notice many people discussing results of equipment and line testing and, although I do not believe there are issues with my install, would like to test the arrangement to obtain some idea of performance. Can...

More PlusNet spam by Paul Herber
Having just received yet more spam from Plusnet after having closed my account a year ago I feel it my duty to publicise their customer service attitude. I have asked to be removed from their mailing list but as I'm not a customer I cannot login to their system. I think I had better post the whole story again: http://www.pherber.com/plusnet/my.html P.S. Dear Plusnet, as it took you 4 months to...

I have ADSL at 2mbps and i am with sky, i have signed up with the 'upto 8meg' package. Until recently i thought that the speed i was getting was becuase of my distance from the exchange. Now the guy next door just got broadband with talk talk, with an upto 8meg package and he is getting 6mbps. Added to that i get constant dropouts and his connection is stable. Now the equipment difference cannot...

Entanet resellers (e.g. fast, ADSL24) by Mike
Sorry for what may be a dumb question, but are Entanet resellers (e.g. fast, ADSL24) classified as Entanet, and therefore members of the ISPA. I know these companies tend to rate very highly, but having the comfort of the protection should things go wrong in future is reassuring -- Mike News

BBC- Britain 'failing' net speed tests by David Horne
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6924866.stm "There is a huge gap between advertised broadband speeds and the actual speeds users can achieve, research has shown. A survey by consumer group Which? found that broadband packages promising speeds of up to 8Mbps (megabits per second) actually achieved far less. Tests of 300 customers' net connections revealed that the average

Orange's Poor Customer Communications by Keith Willcocks
I am a BT customer and have seen many criticisms of their customer service but they are far better than Orange. Many emails over the last few months that I send to my cousin, who is an Orange customer, are bounced back by the Orange server with a message that the content has been rejected. Send them again and they go through fine. He has emailed customer service and gets a reply...
