BT looks at ultra-fast broadband by Sunil Sood
BT, the UK telecommunications group, is considering the case for an ultra-fast broadband network that could deliver internet download speeds of up to 50 megabits per second. Sir Christopher Bland, the BT chairman who stands down in September, said the company was looking at whether to install fibre optic cable as far as the street kerb, where BT phone line cabinets are found. The roll-out...

provider advice by Grouchy.Oldgit@googlemail.com
Being sick of Tiscali's abysmal customer service I am looking to change Internet provider and am considering BT, Virgin and AOL. Would welcome any opinions - good or bad - on these. Also, any experiences of switching provider - does this normally go smoothly with seamless transition from one to other?

Contention ratio by Jeff Layman
I'm investigating going from dial-up to ADSL with my current ISP (mainly to keep the same email address). This month's PC Pro article "The Great Broadband Con" for Fixed-line broadband notes "...the level of contention...is a major source of the problem...". When I asked my ISP what their contention ratio is, they replied: Contention ratios no longer apply to ADSL as of March 2006, BT have...

***** Orange unlimited it isn't. Definitely not the best broadband by chris@fakemailaddress.org
Bitch bitch whine... I just got thrown off Orange unlimited for using 187 GB download on an 8Meg line. They are supposed to give 30 days notice but they just cut me off! If you used an 8Meg line continuously for a month you could download ~= 2500 GB So that's using the line for about 7.5% of the time!

That was until a few weeks ago when I decided to go over to Virgin Media for cable/tv/broadband Horrendous week during changeover, crap customer service etc, thank God I had maintained my BT line and also my ADSL service, hence I...

Just asking. Apparently there are firmware versions out there for my router (ASR-8100 / Safecom SAMR-4110) with UPNP and firewalls for example which aren't implemented currently. Graham
