Situation: Wired ethernet to router; router configured and working since February 6th. All settings known to be saved and correct. Typical settings for a BT-provisioned ADSL connection, i.e. 0/38, PPPoA, telephone , Authentication set to 'Auto'. Exchange is Highcliffe, Dorset. From 10am today, 'Authentication failed' at router. A restart results in the same. Last known...

LLC or VC-Mux - and what's the modulation type? by kevin bailey
Hi, A client has an BT managed business broadband service with a eight static IP's assigned. The BT router was blown during electrical work but unfortunately when BT replaced the router they were never able to get the static IP's working properly. I've got a feeling they were never able to switch off NAT and the firewall.

Out of the frying pan? From Plusnet to Virgin Media by Ade
I've been on plusnet for quite a while not. I used to get around 2.2mb/ sec until they "upgraded" me to their 8mb/s service and since then almost never see 1mb/s and frequently much, MUCH less. So, I already have a telephone line from VirginMedia (NTL) as well as the BT one, so I'm thinking of getting their 10mb/s service. What are the odds of ever seeing performance like that? Most of my heavy...

I hate ISPs by richie
Hi, Can someone please help, am I missing something? If I offer to sell you something and we agree on a deal, and i woefully fail to meet my side of the contractual agreement, I can end up in court for breach of contract. Yet ISPs treat customers with total and utter contempt, fail to provide any kind of support; and they route my calls to India where the person on the other end of the phone...

Any ideas anyone? by anonym
Sorry to bother you all and I'm sure it will turn out to be a simple answer, *BUT*: Round about midnight tonight 10-3-07, I suddenly lost my Internet connection. I can still access email, and the newsgroups on nntp, (obviously), but when I try to open IE7 it just hangs on my home page - www.google.co.uk and no other popular pages like Amazon, eBay, or even the BBC will open either. I have...

whois privacy for UK residents with .com domains? by Unix Guru
US registrars make whois privacy (a.k.a. private domain registration) a prominent feature of their packages, either providing it free or charging extra for it. However UK registrars of .com domains say nothing about whois privacy. A good example is 1&1, whose US site places Private Domain Registration at the top of their domain features list, while the UK site makes no mention of it. Alas...

Virgin option 1 Is there a phone fault number by Mike

Only calls I can make are via Skype and virgin only have 0906 numbers which are not supported by skype. Virgins email fault form is for adsl & emails etc nothing for phone service. I emailed their account...

Sky and Apple machines by Lynn W
I am hoping to move to Sky once my current contract runs out with BTYahoo who I have been with for years. Moving on the grounds of expense as I am having to cut back. I just want to check that Sky broadband works okay with Apple MacBook? Any problems I should be aware of in advance. Lynn

Netgear DG834 and Multiple Internet IP Addresses by rmacd
Hi all, I've recently had another 3 IP addresses added to my broadband connection bringing the total to 4 usable IP addresses for my connection. This is mainly used to provide HTTP on one server and HTTPS +SPOP3 on another. However, I have a Netgear DG834 as the ADSL modem/ router on my network, and it does not seem to provide an option for setting the netmask of the external IP address. As a...

SkyRouter disconect by Grant
Hi i have read back and can't find an answer to this. Yesterday i set up a Wireless Laptop in a home that has a Sky Router. To my amazement i found that the router switched its self off when the PC that it is connected to was shut down, which obviously means the Laptop can not get a connection unless the main PC is on. This to me goes against all what a router is supposed to be. Surly this...

Hoy High Lighthouse by Mike
Mr Banks Further to our telephone conversation this morning. I spoke to Ian Webster of the Northern Light Board who is in charge of buildings. He said he had no knowledge of what was happening at Hoy High but understood that they had fitted gates at various lighthouses. I pointed out that it was normally for towers and engine rooms and not expected for a tearoom/bothy. I also pointed out...

Virgin Media Technical Support - a Cautionary Tale, and a question by Martin D. Pay
I have a friend who after many years as an NTL TV-and-broadband customer just upgraded his Virgin Media broadband subscription, to their new 10MB service. An engineer duly came and installed a cable modem, apparently necessary for 10MB... And then the problems started! To cut a very long story short, my friend could access the broadband service on his wife's laptop but not on his desktop PC...
