| | Comparing these 6 ISP's....comments please? by
Atropos
I'm about to move back to my flat, I'm currently signed up with F2S and have
their 50gb a month, 23.99 8mb product(MAX). Will be leaving Broadband behind
here, so will be a new setup. Have all my own equipment.
I can't really complain about them, I mean, for me, it works. I am aware of
appalling customer service though.
I basically want the same sort of thing. I don't want FUP's, as I...

| | Contention Ratios by
Joe Soap
If the contention ratio of my connection is 50, I am sharing my Internet
link with 49 others.
Is that by hard-wiring, or software configurable?
Is it always the same 49? Or does it vary with the order of people
connecting?
Who decides who the bedfellows are? BT, or the ISP?

windoze networking using several different ports, (and a worm or virus may
use different ones to attack another PC).
Standard security paranoia is to block everything...

| | Wireless Packages by
googlenospam@hotmail.co.uk
Have been with plusnet for some time now at the £21.99 pm landline BB
package. Think their wireless deal is abit of a ripoff when they want
another £28.99 pm for a limit of 500 minutes, thats 8 hour pm. Not
sure if that also applies to existing customers and I've no intention
of trying their WaitForEver phone line to ask.
Sky BB has not reached my area yet, in Sussex there is nowhere...

| | Telewest Bill Foul Up by
Evan
Folks,
I signed up for Talk Anywhere 200 hoping to have a nice flat rate bill
every month( £20). We seem to use just the right amount of minutes
with some carrying over to next month each time.
Last month, my bill stated we used 345 out of 365 possible minutes, yet
almost £5 extra on top was charged for calls over the limit. How can
I have 20 minutes to carry over, and still be over the limit?

| | NTL - Slow Upload Speed? by
section.xiv@ntlworld.com
Hello,
As a new 2MB NTL Broadband customer I'm disappointed to find that my
upload speed is 183.7 Kbps ( = 0.2 Mbps ) at best, as tested using the
speed test at www.adslguide.org.uk, download is OK at 1,925.1 Kbps ( =
1.9 Mbps )
NTL say that the upload and download speed should be 2MB.
I would be interested to hear others views experience on NTL upload

Why not look at setting up VLAN's with a suitable router/WAP?

| | Is Orange Broadband As Bad As They Say ? by
Nigel Evans
A friend joined Orange Starter on September 30. The modem and filters have
not arrived yet but their blurb says that he will be "up and running in
about 10 days" . This caused me to search for reviews of ISP's and I have
been shocked to see that Orange is rated very poor in many reviews. It is
likely that Orange have made BT change the telephone line to enable
broadband at this time, but the...

Freddy@funkyfreddy.fsnet.co.uk
Hi All,
Have some friends, who at the moment prefer the idea of going with BT
for Broadband (all on one bill etc)
I've Googled the newsgroup for previous posts on the subject and
appreciate its been discussed before but just so I have the facts
correct for them is it still the case at the moment that to use a
different "From" e-mail address when using BT's smtp server you must
register this...

On behalf of a non-techie friend!
Do Sky provide a dial-up backup service in case (????) their broadband
fails?
If so, does anyone have the number/login details - especially as I
understand the BB doesn't have personalised login.
