Initially I took the monthly 14.99 package. I phoned the telesales
guy up and asked him specifically "If I cancel this package, is there
any penalty, or fee I have to pay". He replied confidently that I
would only have to pay the price...

| | Slow laptop wireless connection. What to check? by
Stephen@mailinator.com
I have BT Broadband and I recently replaced a desktop pc & BT Voyager
wireless router with a laptop and Netgear DG834G v2 wireless router and
have noticed a considerable drop in the speed of the internet
connection. Even loading google.co.uk can sometimes take about 10-20
seconds versus almost instant with my old setup. Both using IE7.
The desktop setup was fast and stable and the connection...

Thank you for your email.
I am sorry for the delay in replying.
I can confirm that unfortunately we do not have a news server.
I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

| | Bulldog to BE? by
SteveL
I have an 8 mb line with bulldog, but I only see a roughly 3 mb
connection.
That's understandable I suppose because the BT line tests always said
I'm 3.9 km from the exchange (and bulldog's tests somehow claim I'm
now 4.5 km away!).
Bulldog offer 8mb but I only get about 3. Be offer 24. If I moved to
BE (who are in my area) would I expect to see any improvement over the
3mb I currently get?

| | Downloads corrupted by
DAB sounds worse than FM
I've been downloading quite a few applications due to having to reinstall
Windows, but when the applications decompress the downloaded files, some of
the files are corrupted.
Could anybody shed any light on where the corruption is most likely to be
occurring?
If an IP packet is corrupted will this be caught with a CRC and an automatic
repeat request be issued? If so, should that mean that the...

| | Netgear DG834G noise margin readings by
Terry
When I log into my Netgear DG834G wireless router from my PC which is wired
to the router I see a downstream noise margin reading of around 11db. If I
login on my laptop using a wireless connection I see a reading of 22 db! I
have repeated this test several times today and get the same results.
Can anyone suggest an explanation?
TIA,

| | How to cancel broadband when the ISP is unresponsive? by
Richard Kennaway
I've been trying to cancel my broadband account with Fast 24, but they
aren't replying to emails or answering the phone, and I've been trying
for a couple of weeks. Does anyone know if they're still actually in
business?
If Fast 24 continue to fail to take any action, what steps can I take to
get my broadband connection away from them? As I'm moving to another
ISP, not terminating broadband...

In a nutshell...
Disney/ABC are putting up 4 shows (including Desperate Housewives) up for
FREE download in a new service. The shows will have adverts but thats
soemthing to put up with for free.
This is the sort of thing I see as the future of broadband. I do not think
that it will ever replace television - nothing like curling up under the

| | Too Much Choice! Which ISP? by
Stuffed
I'm sure this gets posted a lot here, but I've had enough of my ISP (F2S).
Not only am I paying 23 quid a month for a 512 service, but recently the
email has been completely unreliable, and the customer support is a joke.
On the face of it Tiscali and AOL both do packages that would pretty much
match my needs (though of course they're clear as mud about the actual
details when trying to get your...

| | what sort of ADSL modem? by
Simon Morris
I have a DI-304 ISDN router, and I now have an ADSL connection to Zen.
I'd like to get an ADSL modem that can let the ISDN router use the
ADSL connection, so I can fall back into ISDN if the ADSL go down.
But the ISDN router knows about PPPoE, PPTP, or static IP. Zen want me
to use PPPoA.
I don't think setting the ISDN router to use PPPoE will work (but can
ADSL modems convert between the...

| | Quick clarification on Broadband Speeds by
Tanel Kagan
When a company advertises an 8Mb connection, does that mean 8 megabytes of
data transfer per second? Or are we talking 8 megabits, or even something
else?
In practice, assuming the phone line supports it and everything else is at
optimal setting, what is the maximum data transfer rate on an "8Mb"
connection?
Also, will my speeds be affected if I access around the house with a
Wireless 54Mbps...

Hi guys.
Do you know if BT's using singlemode fibers or multimode?
I thought they are using singlemode, but I saw a MM fiber connected to my
equipment.
Then in goes via cupler to some white fiber, but it doesn't say whether or
not it's singlemode...
Just wondering.
Anyone knows?

| | Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 or USR MAXg by
markalroberts@gmail.com
Hi
I want to get a wireless router that will give me a lot of range -
about 30feet and a wall or two. I don't want to spend much more than
about £65, and I don't want to have to replace my two Belkin 54g
wireless PCI cards.
Looking at what's available, the Buffalo and the USR seem to offer the
increased power/range without needing new cards or costing a bomb.
