(a) not very technical

She has just subscribed to BT Broadband. She has installed her modem, popped
in a microfilter and gone off in search of the internet.

| | Problems with BT over 2mb Broadband - Advice needed. by
Mr Wiffy
I am currently on a 1mb package with Talktalk. I recently applied to have
it upgraded to 2mb (via TalkTalk). It was initially rejected straight away
by BT wholesale, apparently without a reason. TT put the order through
again, and this time it took 24 hours before coming back saying my line
would not support 2mb ADSL. Now, BTs own availability checker says my line
does support 2mb speeds...

| | Check and check again. by
Derrick Fawsitt
I currently have two hard drives, C and G. G is simply a backup that I
now wish to reformat. Unfortunately I have check disk wanting to check
it on each boot up and I tried all the usual registry steps to remove
it. At one time I managed to stop it by following recognised steps but
then got a reminder that the PC was skipping doing it. I used system
restore to try to get back to normal but...

| | line levels by
tangerine_sedge
I'm thinking of moving to faster broadband, but have no idea what speed
my line can handle (Currently 512k). I have the line level stats from
my router (SNR/power etc) but have no idea of what speeds my line might
support. I've googled around for the information, but it's not clear.
Can anyone suggest speeds and the corresponding max/minimum line levels
that are required? I don't have the line...

| | SP2 at last! by
Derrick Fawsitt
Have just installed SP2 at last after being warned not to do so for many
months. I was very much afraid of its effects on my system, human and
PC, but to my surprise it all went well, I can't believe it.
Trouble is, I don't notice much difference, what should I look out for?

| | Network settings on NTL Set top box by
Baz
I have an NTL Samsung set top box that has been working fine for many
months and it is connected to a router. This morning however I
discovered that my broadband connection had failed, so I tried all the
obvious things like rebooting the router and set top box but it did not
come back.
My next step was going through the hell of talking to the Indian call
centre, after an hour I gave up with...

| | Is this line noisy? by
Stroller
I have a friend whose ADSL keeps on dropping and I'm thinking of
trying to pressure his ISP into sending out a BT engineer. His BT
Voyager 105 ADSL modem is plugged into a splitter at the master socket
and there are no other phones connected to the line.
The CTRL-f1 panel of the Voyager 105 utility shows the following figures:
Attenuation is 50dB down, 31.5dB up.
SNR margin 11dB down,...

| | Some Questions about Availability by
K
I did a BT availability check on two phone lines in my work today (for
reasons that I will explain).
The two lines come from the same exchange, and are installed literally next
to each other in the building.
1 result said 2Mb would be available, and the other said 1Mb maybe.
How does that work then. I guess the line lengths will be the same length.
Only difference, one line was installed...

My advice to the OP is correct though; he should be seeing a much
better SNR than he describes on a 50dB loss line, it should be a
minimum of 20dB, and more like 25dB. Clearly there is some interference
and I suspect it could be local and coming in through unbalanced ring
wiring on extensions.

| | Email viruses from NTL accounts by

Has anyone ever had any success reporting virus attacks from NTL accounts?
I'm being inundated here from the same IP address (82.13.45.60) and I must
have reported it a dozen times or more over the last 2 weeks, with no
obvious response from them. I'm beginning to get seriously ****ed at
them...

| | iTunes .... throtteld on Plus? by
RolYat
Are legal music downloads (as opposed to the alleged illegal P2P
variety) throttled on the Plusnet 'Plus' accounts?
I'm 'encouraging' my offspring to be more responsible with how she
acquires her music, but don't want to downgrade a Premier account, from
which she currently gets good speeds, to a Plus account to find it is
unusable.
I suppose iTunes is the most likely candidate for her...

| | Expected speed with 50:1? by
Steve
Hi Folks
Can anyone tell me a reasonable speed I should expect with a `upto
2meg` adsl line with 50:1 contention ratio please?.
My isp has said that I do appear to have a fault after I sent them the
results of some speed tests and they have reported it and it will be
done s.a.p. (whenever that is?).
Running the Giganews speedtest I have been getting speeds of 250 to
300kbps but had 1700 to...

steve church
Hi,
I'm sure this must be easy, but not for a novice. I've connected to NTL
throught their cable modem via the Ethernet port. I now need to add a four
port router to put a laptop on as well. What things do I need to configure
to get it to work.
Thanks.

| | ADSL router with port isolation? by
T i m
Hi All,
I think I spotted an ADSL router the other day that had a tick box
that I believe 'isolated' each of the ethernet ports from each other?
I think it might have been called 'gaming mode' or summat? (can't
remember the make / model though)?
Would this would allow all users to access the internet but not each
other (which is what I want).

Hello,
Sometime ago I helped a friend install broadband in his office
building.
He has recently been complaining that the ADSL is constantly
disconnecting. I went over to investigate and discovered that he has
recently had a new telephone system fitted.
The problem seems to be that the engineer "hard wired" the phone system
