| | ADSL2+ What happens at the exchange? by
WCZ
Stick with me, this does make sense. :-)
I've got a long line which only gives 1Mb. For ages I had a 0.5Mb
connection which left me with an SNR of 11db. Pipex then shifted me to
Tiscali LLU for a laugh but the odd thing about that was I now had a 16db
SNR. Tiscali's kit is definately more recent that the BT kit in my exchange
and a 5db increase would almost double my sync speed (which...

| | Linksys WAG325N Painfully Slow by
Geoff Lane
I recently had a replacement device under warranty, appeared to be a
brand new WAG325N.
Only had it 3 months and now my download speeds have dropped to around
12KB per second. A different router gives 120/130KB per second on the
same line, the latter is about the best I can expect (allowing for a
multiplication of about 8/10 for kbps) due to my distance from exchange.
The Linksys status...

| | Tiscali webmail problems by
John
A neighbour from about four doors down has just asked my advice about a
problem she's having but I don't think I can do much - anyone know any way
round this?
When she opens Outlook Express it checks for mail and tells her that there's
37 messages, and begins to download them. Unfortunately, it gets five of
them but stalls on the sixth one. She's only on dial-up (getting 40kbps) and

| | Anyone use UK Online as ISP by
alexanderd79@googlemail.com
Anyone use UK Online as their ISP? I'm considering moving to them as
they are one of only two ISP's in my area who offer ADSL2 on my
exchange. I'm having major problems with my current ISP as they are
passing my support call between themselves and BT and it's not moving
forward. My connection has been down for 3 weeks and thought that
changing to a LLU on ADSL2 may help.
Any bad or good...

| | Connecting a telecom surge protector *after* a ADSL filter BT Faceplate (Long!) by
Matthew Long
Hiya. I have a Masterplug surge protection with telecom protection. It has
two inputs - Which are a stantard BT socket, and an RJ11 socket. It then has
underneath these sockets, an output side, with the BT, and RJ11 sockets.
It's supplied with a cable with a standard BT plug one end, and a RJ11 the
other end. I currently have the supplied cable plugged into my BT master
socket, and then...

| | o2 BB - Security Issues by
Paul
Just got myself an o2 connection after many years on Zen (first at 2MB
then the 8MB package). o2 Speed and reliability seems ok so far
however, their ideas on security are scary.
First, they give out your o2 username on every outgoing email sent via
their smtp servers (which require authentication), it goes something
like this...

There's nothing worse than someone posting to newsgroups just to vent
their frustrations. I mean, get a life... it's only the internet, right?
And other people's connection issues are like other people's babies... of
very little interest! So look away now. ;-)
Sunday:
Broadband working as usual. Ok, I'm only limited to a 1Mb connection

johngood_____
At the moment I'm with virgin net 'plan2' ( 'not' on the new cable) and have
learnt recently from virgin that my £17.99 a month package, was capped at
2MB data stream and that I could be switched to 5MB IP stream for the same
money I'm paying them. So I asked them to upgrade me to the faster IP system
and Virgin told me to wait 10 days or so for the system to pick up speed.
It's now three weeks...

I see that you can now buy radios that will connect to internet radio sites
via a home network, wired or wi-fi.
Does anyone have any experience of these?

Pipex have decided to charge £1 p/m for paying by credit card. They actually
applied the charge without giving me a chance to change to direct debit
before the payment became due. They claim that the T&C allow them to make
the charge but I can not find it and when I asked the person I spoke to was
unable to point to the relevant sentence.
What also annoyed me was that the email advising the...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7354133.stm
In the UK many net firms manage traffic at peak times in a bid to ensure that everyone gets the highest broadband speed possible.
Best laugh I've had all day (sic)
Highest speeds possible, are they joking ?
My Virgin Media ADSL service is now the very worst it has ever been
during the evenings.

alexanderd79@googlemail.com
My telephone exchange went down for 1 day over a week ago. When it
came back up I got my telephone line back but no broadband. I went
through the usual checks in my home and on my 2 computers, everything
ok. After various frustrating calls to both BT and my ISP (tesco.net)
I finally got someone to beleive that it is the exchange that is at
fault and it no longer seems to support broadband.

This is now applied to Virgin ADSL customers, and will no doubt be
extended to Cable customers.
Application Management:
Application Management is really simple. We have a set of rules that
manages how much bandwidth is allocated to a specific list of
applications and protocols during peak periods. The rules apply to
everyone on the network who is using these application and protocols
