| | BT newsgroup access by
Liam
Hi,
Im thinking of migrating to BT - due to the drop in prices etc. (2meg
for £25 seems to good) I'm currently with Pipex. However with Pipex I
enjoy a free access to all newsgroups - could anyone please advise if
this is the case with BT? I read that AOL have stopped all access to
newsgroups
Thanks in Advance!

| | Any views on ADSL Nation. by
Ben Clay
Living in the sticks has been quite frustrationg but finally we'll get
broadband in March. I'm busy buying faceplates, etc from ADSLNation and have
a problem with their NTE-2005 - incorrect screws to fix it to the NTE-5 and
their IDC tool doesn't fit. Nevertheless, I've wired in the unit (using an
old credit with a thin cut in it - inventive, eh?), stuck it to the NTE-5
with sticky tape for...

| | Why proxy server set to 127.0.0.1? by
Charlie Tame
A popup blocker might do this, check Zone Alarm if it has one, stop blocking
and see if settings change.
In that case what would happen is that ZA is taking over reading the site
and filtering it's content, leaving IE to look at the ZA proxy for the
filtered output.
I hasten to add that I don't know this for sure but it's possible.
There could also be spyware or malware doing this, however...

This is to do with the BT outage in the North of England. Nothing to do with
your ISP i'm afraid, your going to have to stick it out till it's repaired.
I know someone on Tiscali with the same problem, his is now working this
evening though. I'm with BT and i wasn't affected, strange when he stays
over the road from me.
We are in Scotland as well !

| | OT: Satellite alternatives? by
Dave J
On a subject currently in a thread I'd rather not join..
Does anyone know of any noteworthy satellite broadband providers?
I have a friend who has just moved out of N.Wales, from a village where
ADSL *just* become available, to Devon and a village where it certainly is
not. :(
I'm sure I remember hearing recently about a 2 way satellite provider, at
a not too exorbitant price, but I can't...

| | Good ISP for newsgroups? by
Luke Curtis
been looking round to transfer form Pipex - I'm very happy with their
them as an ISP, no download limits and fantastic newsgroups with a 50
day retention.... exept for the fact the newsgroups only are limited
to 10gig per month which is *highly* annoying since if I only update
header on my subscribed newsgroups that take up to a gig a month
what I am looking for is a
1) no download limits...

| | Negotiating contact problems by
Steve
I'm with Freeserve/Wanadoo and use both a desktop and laptop on the same
account.
Both connect to the servers immediately.
The desktop logs in immediately, but the laptop sometimes takes 2 or 3
minutes to negotiate a login.
Any logical reason for this?

| | DSL MODEM/ROUTER by
Bal
Hi Chaps,
looking to get my nephew a Cable DSL modem/router for his Telewest broadband
connection and was wondering if you guys had any recommendations. Not
looking to spend more than £40ish so non-branding isn't an issue.
TIA

Steve Parry
Have they got major issues today?
My broadband fails to connect, although the line says the service is
available and I've just spent 90 mins listening to the "We are extremely
busy yadda yadd yadda" on hold voice on their helpline.

You have installed something that is routing you through your local IP.
What have you installed recently?

ToolsInternet Options Connections tab LAN Settings button
Under Proxy server, make sure the box there is unchecked

Guys as an existing and happy customer I was going to change my service
up to 2Mb & 4GB d/l a month as under the new options this would work out
cheaper then my existing package. According to the FAQ I should be
charged an addition £14.99 for a line regrade but when I went to process
the order it came up as an additional £29.99. Can you please clarify
what the costs etc. should be as I was...

I have two separate broadband accounts. Each on a separate BT
telephone line. One of the broadband accounts is with BT Yahoo the
other is with Freeserve (Wanadoo). One is my daughter's the other 's
mine or business use.
They were both installed over a year ago and have both worked
faultlessly since then. UNTIL:
About two weeks ago at lunch-time one day both broadband lines stopped

Beck
Found this on another group.
Cable Forum has received information tonight from an ntl insider and
other reliable sources that major budget cutbacks have been planned.
Urgent conference calls have taken place earlier today and the following
cutbacks in service have now been planned..
Only Network Masters/Outages affecting more than 30 telco subs are to be
attended out of hours.
Power Outages...

Fred
Has anyone any experience of this ISP's quality of service please?
At the present time they appear to offer the best value for money for
unlimited broadband. I am not bothered about the actual speed, but am
concerned about reliability, billing and customer service.
Currently their site's broadband links are obviously wrong , but is this due
to the rapidly changing products that are being...
