Internal Telephone Wiring by hugh
My house was built in late 70s. The exchange line terminates in a standard patress box in the hall. We have 3 extensions starred out, one in the lounge is a master socket. My current router is on a 15 metre run up to a bedroom which we use as a study. I have disconnect the orange pair as it is not needed and advice elsewhere, b4 I discovered this group suggested it would help. I had always...

Unexplained improvement in speed. by Steve Rogerson
I live at the end of a very long line from my exchange and suffer from outages and noise often caused by squirrels chewing the cables etc. Having said that when it is working I get a fairly constant about 900kb/s download speed and although it would be nice to get a higher rate I am not intending to move which is my only realistic option. Now I find that my speed has gone up to about 2Mb/s...

Problems contacting Virgin Media by Guy Barry
Sorry to bother the group with this but I am going insane. There appears to be a problem with my blueyonder.co.uk account from Virgin Media's cable service. It appears that emails to certain domains haven't been going through for some time. Their website is almost impossible to navigate around, especially with my relatively slow connection. There seems to be no way of contacting them my email...

Are there any good ADSL combined with mobile phone deals out there? by [email protected]
We have two ADSL connections (one home phone line, one business line), one is currently bundled with the BT business line rental and overall for ADSL + line rental + phone costs it's giving us a pretty good deal. However the other ADSL connection is probably relatively expensive for what it is (it's an Entanet reseller) and, as we could well do with changing our mobile phone deals (currently...

How to have two routers ( with one switched off!) by Jack Rabbitt
Hi All, I have my wifi router in the lounge connected to my ADSL line, i always turn it on/off at the plug when not in use. I recently obtained another router which i plan to use in the bedroom, so can turn it on/off when i need it in a more convienient location. I have noticed however that if i have two routers connected to the bt socket via the micro filters that the ADSL does not work -...

Advice on using a Dongle by Dean Jackson
I will be in hospital for a couple of weeks and want to take my Win7 laptop with me. Any advice on using a Dongle cheaply would be appreciated. I see that Ebay have adverts for cheap o2 Dongles and Data SIMs. My home ISP is o2.My mobile is a PAYG with a Tesco SIM. Dean

How to submit items by Davey
From the local Parish Magazine, which is the best source of information and place to find a supplier or tradesman: "We accept items for submission in any of the following formats: MS Word, e mail, .jpg, .bmp, .pub, fax, Basildon Bond, Back of Envelope." If only more institutions flowed that rule! -- Davey.

Firefox browswer opens without warning by John
May possibly be off topic, if so then my apologies. A friend of mine has a 3 mobile dongle he uses to connect to the internet. Every now and again without warning the firefox browser opens, even though he hasn't requested it to. I'm not sure if this is something the dongle is doing or something Firefox is doing. I have checked on both and there doesn't seem to be

Broadband through an old switchboard? by Bob
A friend has a fairly large house with a couple of telephone lines coming through an old switchboard. They've got an ADSL2+ line on the fax number, which I think goes through the same board, and they're considering putting in another broadband line on a different line, but one that also goes through the board. Does anyone know if this is feasible? From what I can work out, the switchboard...

How popular are the various ISPs.? by The Natural Philosopher
Prompted by the Sky shill who claimed that loads of people are connected to sky. They may be, but they don't access my sites. Stripping out the specialist interest addresses from companies and government organisations and the search engines from all over the world, my site has the following total hits to the main web pages (i.e. I count a page as a hit, but not te images and so on in it)

Random nuisance phone calls, Caller ID showing 0121314xxxx by Alan J. Wylie
I was woken up at 02:27 this morning by the phone ringing about three times. The Caller ID showed 01213140003 There are many, many calls like this happening, see for example http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/01213140001 seeming to originate from the whole number range. A couple of the firms that own the numbers have posted...

Increase in Virgin Media prices by Guy Barry
I've just been informed by Virgin Media that their broadband prices are increasing by 1.50 a month from 1st April. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about it, because they have a monopoly over the cable service (I don't have a traditional phone line). Can anyone explain why Virgin have been allowed to maintain their monopoly over the cable network while BT have been forced to give up theirs...

BT Broadband - Why is it slower by Rob
I had Tiscali Broadband for soem time. Being on the edge of town I got about .75 megs. (Speeds measured by a measuring device supplied by OFCOM and connected directly to the router) When the BT engineer was fixing the phone line he discovered an unnecessary 3 mile loop and when he removed it we went up to 1.5. When they (Now called Talk-Talk) started behaving silly I moved to BT. (I know...

Revenge is a dish ... by Adrian C
A friend has had Plusnet broadband installed simply by installing the wireless router and following the installation instructions. His only PC is wired to the router, and unfortunately he (and, er... OK, me) wasn't awake enough to disable the wireless features or setup a different wireless SSID/Key than default. Well, seems a neighbour has cracked it and frittered away this months 10GB...
