| | Broadband without a BT master socket by
Martin Wiseman
Hi,
My mum wants to upgrade to broadband, however she doesn't have an
official BT master socket in the house (she has one that I fitted myself
many years ago), instead she is renting a traditional wall mounted GPO
style telephone.
She can't get rid of the old phone because, being wall mounted, it would
leave a hole in the wallpaper and "she likes the wallpaper and doesn't
want to replace...

| | SNR levels? by
NTL Binary
I wonder if someone knowledgeable in ADSL technology could give me
some advice please?
I have been experiencing loss of sync on my ADSL (512/256) for some
time. The period between dropouts would vary between a few minutes
to 4 hours or more.
I raised the problem with my ISP who in turn escalated it to BT who
said there was a fault on my line. A BT engineer called to say the
fault had been...

Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2
Connect using a D-Link G604T
In 'My Network Places' there is a new Network Task 'Show Icons For Networked

Is there any danger in turning this on as it seems to open up a port in the
new Service Pack 2 firewall?

| | Plusnet; an example maybe, but a change to service levels is needed? by
John Lyons
In this case, the ISP, Plusnet, absolutely insist this £99 cancellation
fee is "non-negotiable" if the customer wishes to cancel. I'm sure there
are other other ISP's who perhaps have the same 'policies'.
Talk about rock and hard place for the customer.... ADSL isn't working
but you have to remain a customer and wait for it to be declared ELF by
BT before you can "apply" for a refund, or you can...

Beck
Going to be ordering BTYahoo for games consoles and get the speedtouch 530
router for £20.
I do have a frog modem but that requires ICS as one PC as windows 98 first
edition I cannot use ICS.
I just wanted to confirm that using the 530 requires no use of ICS and will work
on a win98 first edition machine? Is the sharing setup solely on the router or
do the settings have to be on one...

Stephen Soutar
I am looking to buy a wireless adsl modem/router and looking at two in

either?
Thanks,

installing this for a friend and they thought that they had ADSL...
Go round there and to find a cable modem when we have ordered an adsl
kit.
OK
He has a NTL cable modem with a rj45 and usb connection.

| | Dialstar the best adsl deal now! by
Eric S
Hi,
It has come to my notice this offer from http://www.dialstart.co.uk of
£17.99 p/m for unlimited surf 512/256 Kbs. Am with Nildram at the
moment, which is very reliable but costs for the same service £22.99.
Before I switch the thought of checking reliability of Dialstar came
to mind. But adslguide does not have them on their chart list. Wow.
Has anybody here have experience with them?

| | some technical questions regarding ADSL by
Martin Warby
As I understand it g.dmt use 247 4khz channels,do these start at 0hz ?
if so do this mean that 246 are available for DSL (I presume that the 1st
channle is for pstn, but I am unsure as to wether the typical filters cut
off is sharp enough)?
How much data is carried in 1 4khz channel (is it even fixed) ?
Which range of channnels are typically used for upstream and downstream ?

| | Which wireless router/modem? by
Michael Rodgers
Hi,
I hope to get ADSL soon and will be investing in a wireless access point,
router and modem-in-one jobby.
I've got 3 computers, all with Asus 802.11g WLan cards. The furthest
distance between computers is about 15 metres. It's just around the house
and all the machines roughly on the same level. I'd like to spend up to £80
and have the following criteria:

I live on the 6km mark from my broadband enabled exchange and I am unable to

A friend has an NTL Broadband connection, is there a dialup number that he

Broadband Blueyonder).

Having just put broadband in 2 days ago I am puzzled as to why I need
filters. I have just tried making and receiving phone calls with an

of them but the other 2 work just as well.
Does one need filters to lessen interference with the connection speed...

| | Netgear DG834G constantly requires rebooting by
b0yce
Hi all,
I searched for a Netgear NG but couldn't find one. Also checked their
website, but to no immediate avail! Last ditch is a support call, but
hopefully that will come later.
I have recently removed the "frog" alcatel USB modem and replaced with the
Netgear DG834G ADSL Wireless Router - hoorah! Now since this is powered
seperately, unlike USB, I thought just leave it powered on even...
