| | Newbie setup and choices question by
Rifleman
I currently have ISDN with NDO and a Domain name that points email to the
pop server at NDO.
BT will be upgrading my exchange in the near future and I would like some
pointers in what direction to go.
Firstly, what are the logistics involved in hosting my own domain name and
mail server? Would the server have to be on and connected 24/7? Would I need
expensive software to do this or are there...

| | ADSL signal to noise ratio. by
Peter Crosland
Purely out of curiosity what sort of figures would be expected from a
functioning UK ADSL line? I note that my router reports line attenuation
consistently at 54dB but the SNR fluctuates from 11 up to 20dB. Constructive
comments would be welcomed.

| | BT SDSL attenuation limits? by
Richard
I currently have a BT 2Mb SDSL line through a Cisco 800 series router,
which is not as fast as I thought. I know BT have an informal limit of
50-60dB attenuation for ADSL, and I also know that SDSL has a lower
limit. My SDSL attenuation is currently at 51dB:
Actual rate: 2056 Kbps
Modem Status: Data (0x1)
Received SNR: 41 dB
SNR Threshold: 23 dB
Loop...

| | Strange Email problem by
Jon
Hi,
On Plunet 512K ADSL, and happily for about 6 months now, netgear DG824M
Wirless / 4 port ethernet router, windows XP Pro, Outlook 2003.
Suddenly without changing any settings on my router of computer, Outlook
is refusing to connect to 3 different POP3 servers from my various mail
accounts. I can ping and tracert the POP servers from a DOS prompt and
all are there and responding fine....

| | Broadband on one wire? by
S
Had an BT engineer out at my house today, a problem with the voice part
of my service rather than ADSL.
This guy told me he wasn't ADSL trained, but told me of an ADSL trained
colleague who'd had experience of ADSL working (albeit *very* slowly)
with only one wire out the copper pair working.
Is this possible?

| | If BT cease the line....? by
Gus
you have to resign up as they disconnect both phoneline and ADSL at the same
time. I had that myself on a home line after the BT billing dept. that
didn't process a payment on time, so was without phone and
ADSL for 3 weeks. 3 weeks cause I couldn't afford the reconnection fee for
both phone and ADSL in one go, so would have been 2 weeks.

I seem to be getting packet loss with huge downloads, suppose it could be a
router problem or just sods law. I'd be interested in feedback from any
other f2s users on this and f2s in general.
