| | Upgrading 512kb to 1mb - BT say no Sir by
Tom West
We had 512kb ADSL installed in August this year when it became
availble on our exchange. Earlier this month our ISP (Force 9) said
we could upgrade to 1mb for a lot less than they use to offer it for
as BT were doing home 1mb connections (as I'm sure you're all aware).
Anyway, we went ahead and BT have come back and said that on testing
the line they found the line loss was over the limit for a...

| | Next Question - Gateway PC or ADSL Modem/Router by
Kimball K Kinnison
Ok from my previous question it looks like Plusnet is the way to go -
interesting that no-one using Zen replied!
Anyway next question. At present I am on BT satellite but will be changing
to ADSL as my exchange is going to be enabled soon.
The satellite feed goes from the Sat Modem into one NIC on a computer
running Windows XP. This sits it the corner of the room with no monitor,
keyboard or...

| | Line Loss by
Michael Rodgers
Just failed the extended reach trial.
Apparently, my Line Length was 5.5km, and my line loss was 72db.
Why the loss on the line so high? I know someone with a 6km line with just
40db loss, is there anything at all I can do to sort this out? Would
ordering a new line help?

| | Accessing newsgroups from BT Midband by
Oliver Keating
I have BT Midband installed, but cannot seem to access newsgroups. At the
moment I am connecting to Freeserve- but ironically I have to pay
(phonecalls) whereas BT midband gives me a monthly 150 hour allowance.
I have tried connecting to news.btinternet.com, or news.btopenworld.com, but
without success. Am I doing something wrong?
Apologies if this is not the most appropriate place to post this...

| | Choosing a provider by
Ed Fielden
Hi all,
Considering making the leap to ADSL from dialup. Local exchange is ADSL
enabled, and we have an analogue line, so I don't think there should be a
problem in that department.
I've been looking for broadband providers in the UK but have turned up only
a few:
- PlusNet

Alex
Hey - just changed from my speedtouch 330 to an ASR-8400 to allow me to
connect my wifes computer to my pipex 512 account, and now i cant work out
how to get games running on the Halflife engine to work online.
They just fail to be able to connect - if anyone can help - that would be
great.
I presume its in the modems settings, but i have had bad experiences messing
with them before !
Thanks -...

| | Connection Problems by
Dave
Hi,
I've been successfully using BT OpenWorld for 10 months but have recently
developed a problem connecting:
Upon start-up (Win2k) the BT OpenWorld desktop icon gives connection errors
and fails to connect - even on redial. If I then open IE and select the
option to connect from there, there is no problem.
I've re-installed Windows, setting up OpenWorld from fresh and get exactly

| | BT Openworld and gamepsy by
David Poulet
I've had BTO adsl for a few months now and using gamepsy arcade to
locate servers (MOH being my particular weakness).
For the first 4 months or so there were always dozens of servers with
a decent ping time - in the 50-100 ms range, but in the last few weeks
this has degenerated and now there are never any servers less than
100ms and most are 150-200+.
Is this likely to be some problem I should...
