| | question about changing ISP by
David Horne
I'm coming up to the end of my 12 month BT broadband contract, and I'm
thinking of switching, just to save money. I think £28 is a bit steep
for a no-frills broadband account. Given that I've had no problems with
my adsl service, I obviously don't want to rock the boat unnecessarily.
However, given the way that adsl works, am I right in assuming that I
could reasonably expect the same adsl...

| | Port forwarding on Conexant 4 port adsl router by
Graham Russell
I've been playing for hours and I can't get port forwarding to work on my
Conexant (Dabs value) 4 port adsl modem/router.
The documentation I've read implies it works and with the latest firmware
version from Amigo's web site (CA6XR-GN.0924.00T)
the gui has all the right controls to set it up. I've mapped the ports on
the Virtual Server page to the local IP address.
I'm trying to enable web...

| | Using router with Virgin Broadband? by
Glenn Clark
Yes you can use a router fine, I am currently using a DG814 quite happily.
The only problem is that the download speed quite often is very slow and you
need to reboot the router at least once a week for some reason, I know this
is not a fault of the router as it was happily working in bt for 6 months
without a single reboot.

| | 1Mbit ADSL Access in New York by
Sam
Hi there,
I'm about to rent a flat out in the US (work is sending me there on a temp
placement) and I was wondering if there was an equivalent of
www.adslguide.org.uk for the US?
I need to get a 1Mbit ADSL connection with one or two static routable IP
addresses when I'm out there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

| | Need 'normal' router, messenger must have by
TX2
I need a 'normal' ADSL modem/router to simply split an ADSL connection
between 3 PC's. I don't want feature rich la di da.
The only proviso is that it must support MSN Messenger use.
I need a router because the machine the USB connection currently goes
thru via ICS, is regularly rebooted and this of course means other users
have to wait for it to come back online before they can again access...

| | Contention Question by
s7uar7
I understand that 50:1 contention means that up to 50 people are sharing
bandwidth, but sharing how much exactly? Does it mean that if all 50 are on
a 512 connection you could potentially have download speeds of 10Kbps, or am
I completely misunderstanding it?

| | US Robotics SureWontConnect 9003 ADSL Router by
nospam-daveferris@dsl.pipex.com
Not sure if anyone will remember the thread(s) here and on uk.broadband
about the USR SureConnect Router
but thought you might enjoy hearing the ongoing saga of my experiences. I
did say I'd let you know how I got on.
Basically it looks like a timing issue with their PPP/IPCP stack thats
become more or an issue after something got
changed either by Pipex or BT.
After realising USRs PPP stack was...

| | Problems reaching certain sites by
Dylan Parry
Hi,
I use GioInternet, and so far I have not had any problems. Since yesterday
I have started having problems accessing certain sites (eg.
http://www.wh2.org) which worked previously.
I have tried traceroutes for some of these sites and they strangely seem
to be routing via the USA when the servers are physically located in
London! This seems a bit odd to me.

| | How much will BT do to make ADSL work? by
Mike
At the moment I have Home Highway and am considering migrating to ADSL
(with Nildram - good idea?).
The BT line test checker for my line and adjacent ones shows the line to
be quite long but they SAY it should be OK (they would wouldn't they)
However in the old analogue days the line was sometimes quite noisy even
for a phone and so I expect that the faults will stop ADSL working
reliably.
I...

| | Microfilter problem? by
Paul
Hi,
I've bought 2 microfilters, 1 for upstairs (where there is a PC and
telephone) and 1 for downstairs (where there is just a telephone).
Whenever the computer is on and broadband is connected, I pick up the phone
and there's an annoying high frequency tone. When the broadband/computer is
off, the tone disapears and returns to just a normal phone tone.
I'm using Fujitsu FDX100-UK...

Is it possible to connect to Virgin Broadband using a router?
We have a router/ADSL modem in our flat left behind by a previous
tenant, although your website only mentions using a standalone ADSL
modem.
Thanks for any advice,

| | Solwise USB Modem won't install on Inspiron 8000 by
Tiny Tim
I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop which I rebuilt last week with Win XP Pro
(been running XP OK since launch but I wanted to tidy up the machine). I am
trying to install a Solwise SAR900 modem and it will not complete the
install successfully. The install hangs in rasXP.exe and I am left with
error code (10) against the device. I have tried different sets of drivers
from Solwise and other sites...

Tosh Man
Hi, I have solo 500 connection on pipex, and I want to upgrade to the solo
1000 service, I know the service is yet to be launched but when I come to
check my line if I can receive 1mb it states that my exchange does not
support it.
Now this is the funny part, my next door neighbour and a friend down the
street tried the same test (they are both on pipex solo 500) and their tests
came up with...

| | Advice for Router by
J Houston
We need to upgrade our network ADSL connection and I'm
looking at the Netgear FVS318 Router and a yet-to-be determined
ADSL modem. As I understand it, the Netgear FVS318 allows
VPN, which is important as the boss wants to sit at home and
connect to the office.
(He used to do this before when our server was running
WinXP on a peer-to-peer network by dialling in to
the office and connecting that...
