| | AOL / non BT line ? by
Colin Wilson
*not for me - hold the flames* ;-)
Just been asked if AOL can provide broadband on a non-BT line, and I
thought I spotted something recently about them having an arrangement
with cable companies to use their lines for an "equivalent" service over
cable.
Have I lost the plot completely ?

| | speedtouch 330 - XP won't recognise it by
Antony
How nauseating! Installed Speedtouch 330 software, plugged in the
modem, restarted - no lights on the modem! Various attempts to find
the modem result in it (and my USB joystick, which was fine
previously!) not being recognised.
Anybody else had these probs? And more importantly, how did you fix
em?
I've got XP with SP1 installed

| | Draytek 2600 firewall settings by
Kev Parkin
Hi, I've just got me the above router - wow, how easy is this to
install!
I'm a newbie to firewalls though, can anyone give me some help on how
to set this thing up, is there "standard firewall configuration" that
anyone can send me - or a "firewalls for dummies" tutorial available.
TIA

| | SMTP on BT Broadband by
Robin
OK, a buddy called me tonight regarding his new connection to BT Broadband,
haveing just realised they provide him no kind of email. A little research
later and I discover that they do not even provide an SMTP server.
Obviously he could use Yahoo / hotmail etc, but that is not ideal.
If he wishes to use Outlook Express, how can he do it? He can still receive
his former ISP POP3 account, but...

| | Yahoo / BTYahoo problems by
John Edgar
I am using BTOpenworld broadband, which has now been redesignated as
BTYahoo broadband, or so I believe.
Ever since using this service, for the last week, I have been unable
to access my email account at Yahoo. I am constantly re-directed,
automatically, to the BTYahoo mail service. This happens whatever I
do. Even when typing in mail.yahoo.com in IE exactly the same happens.
I am completely at...

| | Broadband questions by
Jose Jimenez
I have a few questions I need some help on as im on the verge of
signing up with Nildram's basic service.
Firstly, there is no SMTP server included and Im not sure I fully
understand what this means. I know its related to sending out emails
but how important is this? I have a POP3 email account and as far as I
know I can still use Outlook Express to compose and send emails so it
shouldn't make...

| | ISP's & P2P by
Rob
My local exchange gets ADSL in December and I am now in the process of
choosing an ISP. I use P2P networks such as Kazaa and WinMX but I believe
some ISPs block the ports used by these file sharing programs. Does anyone
know where I can find a list of ISP's which prevent file sharing. Any
comments on ISPs in general are also welcome.

| | Connection sharing question ? by
Alex
Hey Guys
I have just ordered Pipex "solo 2 go" and am getting an Alcatel 330 usb
modem as part of the deal, I have 2 PC`s and want them both to have
independent access to the internet. I used to have them connected using
10/100 network cards and a crossover cable, but this caused problems as I
had to have both computers on to use the second one online with ICS.
If i got a cheap USB 4 port hub,...

| | From Nildram to where ? by
dee
Nildram have just announced that they are ceasing access to their only
decent binary news feed. I have 5, possibly 6 dsl accounts to shift to
another ISP, either one with a decent feed or a cheaper one in order to
get feeds from elsewhere.
Does anyone have any suggestions ?
thanks,
dee

| | broadband filters by
Ian
I've just received my modem connection pack from Freeserve and it came with
2 filters for phones/fax connected to any socket. As I'll be using my laptop
in my bedroom with no other phone devices, do I still need to use the filter
between the modem and phone socket? Your comments will be appreciated.
Cheers
