Better upload speeds anytime soon? by mike
I've just been looking at some of the providers who do 2MB connection, sadly though only offer 256kbps upload :-( Does anyone know when we will start to see ISP's offering better upload speeds? I have to upload about 14GB of files in the next 3 weeks. Not really looking forward to it :-/

Pipex or Bulldog for residential 1Mbps downstream service? by Chris Michael
I've given notice to cancel my dreaded Freeserve Broadband service, yippee!!! They say it'll take about 10 days, we'll see though. Now, I need to decide between Bulldog and Pipex as my next service provider. I want to up my connection to 1Mbps downstream. I do use newsgroups quite a bit so can anybody comment on Bulldog's newsgroup availability (I've heard Pipex limit their download speed from...

VPN Win98 by G
Hi I'm sure somebody here has been through this and can give a little advice. I'm running a couple of Win98SE machines (and an old Win95) with a DG814 modem/router. My company has just decided to visit the 21st century and install a VPN server (is that the correct term?) from Astaro. I have been onto Microsoft's web-site and donwloaded their VPN client, then I tried to install it. The message...

Microfilter quality by Michael Klontzas
My cheap microfilter seems to be playing up: audible line noise, phenomenal degradation of analogue modem connection speed, 'weaker' phone ringing and now answerphone problems. Before I get myself a new one, do these problems actually go away with a quality microfilter? Any experiences with any of these: Fujitsu FDX100-UK ADSL Microfilter U.S.Robotics USR ADSL Microfilter Dabsvalue ADSL...

Plusnet subscription due for renewal - what to do? by Peter
My 12 month contract with Plusnet is up for renewal, I was paying the £32.99 all inclusive start up package, modem, activation etc. Now. Plusnet do ADSL Home Surf £18.99 which does not support file sharing (peer-2-peer) software or binary newsgroup articles. Can they actually stop you using say WinMX & Giganews etc if so, how? They also offer ADSL Home £21.99 which is basically what I am...

BT Broadband/Dail Up Numbers by Helpful Bod
All, Have searched through the BT Internet site, but can't find the answer. I have a BT Broadband account, with that I doubt have access to a dial up, for back-up purposes. 1) What is this number? 2) As I pay nearly £30, is there a free phone number I can use?

better firewalling rules for IPCOP/SmoothWall? by robert w hall
I've read recently that the default setup of SmoothWall & IPCOP should be tightened, to allow less possibility of unintended outward traffic. Anybody know where I can find a better set of iptables/ipchains rules to apply(*), or an example of the required rule to adequately block the return route. (I've tried a quick Google but found nothing relevant) Bob (*I'm personally interested in ipchains...
