| | exchange to be activated . . . BUT by
Peter Montgomery
Our exchange is to be broadband activated early November.
When I moved into this house a couple of years ago I wanted 2
residential lines - one for the phone and one for fax/internet.
BT connected a line splitting divice to the line to achieve this - so
they can now charge me for two line rentals (even tho the speed of
internet access on this split line is awful).
I think it would pay me to go...

Happy Dave
Hi Group,
Just ordered my ADSL and before its activated i would like to sort out a
network. The wife has a PC in her office in the house and I have an office
in the external garage. I'd like them to share the ADSL but am struggling a
bit. A couple of questions:
1. if we both had ADSL modems attached could we share the internet at the
same time? or would i need a router for this?
2. Assuming I...

Just wanted to check on 1 Mbps or 2 Mbps service being OK.
Can you confirm who actually supplies the ADSL connectivity ?
A traceroute to say news.bbc.co.uk would be useful, and the part
of the login user details after the "@" also handy... (From the
past, dial-up access wasn't in-house but supplied by AIH, so is
ADSL done on similar lines ?) Peter M.

| | Does BT Openworld have an unfaire advantage? by
Andy
My exchange is due to be enabled on Septembers 6th and I have signed up with
Eclipse. They tell me that BT will not do a line check and thus give a me a
date until on or after this date.
A friend has signed up with BTO and he says he has been give an activation
date of 17th September.
Does this sound right, if so surely BT customers are surely being give
preference over other ISPs.

| | Is BT blocking port 135? by
Shaun
Hi
My Exchange server is in the US; I can use the outlook client from my
PC if I dial up via freewire, or vodafone. However, if I use ADSL
from btopenworld, since a week ago I have not been able to get
messages from the server.
Our US guys tell me they've had problems from ISP's who have been
blocking 135 since the MSBLAST virus.

| | ADSL problem: Copperjet 810 and Tiscali by
Anthony Carter
Hi,
I have a USB adsl modem that works on the Tiscali network. However, I am
also trying to connect my Copperjet 810 adsl modem from Holland through
Ethernet to Tiscali UK, unsuccesfully. I set VCI to 38 (UK standard), but I
still have no connection. The modem gives the normal lights that there is a
connection, but when I try to send or receive data, nothing happens.
I am not sure if this is...

| | Netgear FR314 by
Phil Whitworth
Hi All
I am interested in the Netgear FR314 Firewall/Router for my ADSL
connection. I currently use a DG814, but I want a router with built in
firewall.
As the FR314 does not have an ADSL modem built in, I need an ethernet
ADSL modem to connect to it. Does anyone have any reccomendations? One I
have neen looking at is the D-Link DSL-300G+, would this work with the
Netgear?

| | Blueyonder customer wishing to go wireless - need advice by
Martin Stockdale
I've recently gone broadband with Blueyonder (no choice since exchange
nowhere near threshold for ADSL), and I wanted a similar setup to you right
from the start.
I started looking for a combination switch/router/Wireless Access Point, and
having looked at various at between £60 and £90, I found the Adaptec
AWN-8084 4-port wireless router from Amazon for only £49.99 so without much
more looking...

Hi
Having previously been a highly satisfied Blueyonder customer, I now find
myself using NTLworld, and I'm not very impressed. I started with the 128k
connection & then upgraded to the 600k connection but saw virtually no
improvement. Consequently I have now downgraded back to the 128 connection,
which is OK.
What do you users think of the BT service, are you satisfied & would you
recommend...

Mathias Neumüller
Hi,
I'm still having trouble with the above modem router (see post "Ethernet
crashes ..."), but it's definitely not down to the LAN. It seems that
the more traffic is on the WAN network (evening etc), the more likely is
the router to crash. I've already swapped the hardware, with no change
whatsoever and my ISP (Virgin) is also unable to identify any problem.
Has anybody experienced similar...

Interesting one... something in a radio drama recently suggested that a

privacy, are there any precedents to show ownership of an item of e-mail

Les Desser
I have found what seems to be a problem with the DG814 and wonder if
other users could check it out to see if it is a general problem - I
found one reference on Google about a year ago.
If you go to http://scan.sygatetech.com/ check if these two 'common
Trojan' ports ( 54321 and 12345) are shown as Closed rather than
Blocked.
On all our PCs connected to the DG814 they show as Closed...

I am thinking of getting the Nildram ADSL package, along with the USB
modem they offer. Can I, at a later date, install a router using the
existing USB modem? I have a Realtek RTL 8139/810X family fast
Ethernet NIC card installed, and am running Windows XP (home). Many
