Contention & how can I be sure I'm afflicted by Harry the Horse
I've had a ClaraNet ADSL 512K connection for a couple of years. It's been very stable and performance has always been good. Suddenly it's all gone wrong. For the last two days, performance has been crap: very often the browser will time out on DNS lookup. It will right itself for a few minutes then it's crap again. There doesn't appear to be any pattern to the problems such as happening at a...

Smart dialer causes phone line crackles now we have ADSL by Paul
For many years I've been using a "smart dialer" programmed to dial "140" automatically before most calls so that they route through SkyTalk. As we have line rental from BT and get around £5/quarter of free local/national calls, to use this allowance every now and then we press "##" to bypass the smart dialer and route through BT. Fine, but 1 August we got ADSL broadband. The router works a...

The router will either stealthily ignore incoming traffic or report back the the port is "closed". It goes no further.

PlusNet Question. by Still waiting for ADSL !
I phoned PlusNet yesterday and they tell me that my aacount will become active on the 13th of this month. A neighbour of mine has been signed up with BT to get ADSL for over 3 months, but he was told that his ADSL will become activated on the 20th of this month? Is it likely that PlusNet have the date wrong, or is there a chance I could get activated before my neighbour, even though he ordered...

cpu to run usb adsl modem on dedicated firewall by robert w hall
What horsepower of cpu do I need to run an alcatel usb modem on a _dedicated_ firewall (eg running smoothwall or ipcop, or their windows equivalents)? (I was hoping to get away with a K5-75 from the scrap-box so I didn't need a fan, but saw a post recently implying these usb devices were similar to win modems in terms of cpu overhead...) Bob

BT Broadband by David Cleland
Hi, I am so peeved off given the amount of advertising of broadband to find it is not as available as BT would like you to think. We are about to move house and I just checked our new postcode Here is the reply. If Broadband from BT is made available in your area, a preliminary check on your postcode suggests you may be able to order it (although you are on the distance limit of being able to...

How do I protect myself now that I am online 24 hrs per day. I have a basic adsl modem, with currently no protection. I am running Windows 98 Second edition. What are my options. I am running Norton's antivirus 2003 does this mean that I should be using Norton Firewall? Zone Alarm has been recommended. Anybody any comments?

COMSAL Problems??? by Paul King
Hi all, Anybody else having problems with COMSAL ? http://www.comsal.co.uk I placed an order with them last Thursday but their On-Line Store link has been down since Friday. Its back up again as of lunchtime today, but they're not answering the phones. I was rather looking forward to being "on broadband" by now, but I'm beginning to have my doubts. At least the order hasn't been processed by my

plus.net new subscription questions by Martin²
I believe it's only P2P which is disabled. You can set up filters on your Outlook Express to deal with multiple email addresses in various ways. You can upgrade any time, PlusNet is not going to turn down the extra moneys, not to mention there is just one month notice anyways. No, BT will do the testing at installation time. One way out is to buy your equipment from PC World, you can take it...

Sharing broadband over an 802.11g connection? by Lee@DVDDebate
I asked before, but I'm hoping the header wasn't descriptive enough for anyone to bother looking. The alternative is that no-one has actually done this yet, which I can't believe. I want to be able to connect my PC downstairs to the internet without having the PC upstairs turned on; likewise with my laptop. Question is, how do I get this to work? Here's what I have so far: ADSL Nation X-Modem...
