| | Advice for a braodband router by
Jolltax
Hiya,
I am having boradband activated on 4th August and will be self-installing.
Karoo will be my ISP (I have no choice as I do not live in BT land).
Could anyone recommend which combined router/firewall/wireless/switch to use
to connect my small network to the net (3 PC's). It would replace an
existing 5 port 100 Mbps switch.
I play online games (CS, BF1942 etc), do video conferencing (MS...

| | Comments on the effectiveness and responsiveness of Brightmail antispam service? by
Robert M Jones
I would be grateful for comments from those whose ISP's are using the
Brightmail antispam service.
Here at BTO we are finding that it is extremely ineffective at filtering
certain types of spam, and very slow at responding to obvious patterns
of more or less identical spam with clearly obvious subject lines and
repeated domains in the html content. We have been able to get virtually
no...

| | ISDN conversion while still on contract by
Gareth Attrill
Hi,
My exchange is being upgraded to ADSL on the 22nd October and I need
to start thinking about converting my ISDN setup.
Due to BT saying "exchange unviable, unviable, still unviable" and
nothing on the horizon I signed up for ISDN and will still have about
6 months on the contract come Oct 22nd.
I know BT will waive the remaining term of the contract if you sign up

Slugsie
I don't 'need' a faster service, I just 'want' one. :)
To be honest, the most important factor for me is the permanent connection.
The speed isn't a big issue, except for the (all too frequent) occasions
when I have multiple downloads going. Speed is one of those things that in
computer terms you can never have too much of (like hard drive space), so
seeing as how faster services are now...

| | Reintsall AOL 8 fixes problem?? by
Tstungo
I think my PC is sick, it often refuses to boot and it being a real nightmare.
However today, for the second time, reinstalling AOL 8 seemed to fix the boot
up problem (I only tried this as eventually when it did boot the broadband
connection wasn't there).
Anyone else found this or know why?
(No AOL-bashing please - I know I'm a sucker already!)

Steve H
I've embarked on an experimental project which involves serving
web-like content over TCP to remote users. I've been completely happy
with plain dialup access for my ordinary net access, but realise that
this will be insufficient if I plan to be able to serve several remote
users concurrently. I will require additional bandwidth and will
benefit from an always-on connection.
I have two...

Hi,
in the process of trying to find a cheap cable router, and when I search for
details via Google (UK) I find pages of sites with different names all
offering the cheapest deals on the web for cable routers.
Strangely, when you click through for details they all point to Amazon.
Does this indicate that Amazon is the cheapest (a couple of squid cheaper

Not sure how the above are rated, or if they can help you, but they might be a

You could pop over to www.adslguide.org.uk and look at the list of ISP's and
then compare them to each other. Also have a look in their forums.

David W.E. Roberts
Hi,
I already have Nildram ADSL and an established network, with a Solwise
SAR705 modem/router and a D-Link DWL-1000AP.
I was looking to add another wireless AP and started searching, and also
noted from NG posts that AP/routers were much the same prices as an AP.

If you can't get wires based (BT) ADSL, is satellite based BB worth it?
What's the cost, and the technical issues involved?
Is it as fast, faster, or doesn't compete?
A friend is asking me, and I would like to be able to answer him
factually.
